It might be a bad injector.it smells from the exhaust and have some white smoke sometimes.
P38 4.6 goes to 1800 rpm after starting

I'd pull the plugs then and just check before you put your hand in your pocket
I haven't forgot. went to try do it today but cant get in the throttle pot connector as it points down.
So have done some checking to probe at the other ends (at the ECU plugs) will try again tomorrow. How did you probe it?
But while I was digging for connector/pin location I came across this page.
When you have the 1800rpm issue will it rev more?

After some discussions I also think it is an injektion problem too rich mixture

my money is still on either an intake air leak you haven't found yet, or sticky throttle butterfly.
