range rover v8

Hello all im new on here just got myself a 2002 4.4 v8 range rover love it to bits but heres the problem.

I picked the car up from the garage they had checked all the fluid levels, i drove it 40 miles on the motorway about 65mph, then when got close to home decided to open up the v8 ne7xt thing i know the temp is in the red!!! so i slow right down and crawl home at which point water is coming out of the cap of the header tank, i rang the guy and carried on, so i filled it back up once it cooled down and all seemed well.

I ran the car all week no problems, untill i was coming home and decided to open it up again and guess what it boiled in the header tank BUT the temp was reading half way (normal).

So rang my local land rover dealer to book it in, i ran the car over the weekend till today again no problem.

Land rover spent 4 hours looking at it today leaving it running went down motorway, tested sensors on computer, flow tested radiator and could find nothing, well seems very odd to me, all they could come up with is the cap on the header tank, if thats not very very tight it could cause that.

Does this sound right???

Any suggestions what to do next??

Since getting the car back ive kept it in sports mode and my foot has not come off the floor all night and it been ok!!!

Help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I do believe that (as sprirising as it might be) symptoms like yours may be caused by the cap not forming a proper seal on the header tank.

It is a plausible explanation, and if you have not had any problems since then it would suggest that it was the cause.

Let's hope it continues to be ok.

Matt

ive done head gaskets on a couple of 4.4's and in both cases all the head bolts were loose!!! very strange.

both vehicles were throwing coolant from the expansion tank

That is very bad news!!

What sort of miles were on the cars??

Its been ok since its been into land rover but they suggested doing a coolant change and putting proper range rover coolant in.

they had around 30,000 on them, i think its probably a fault when the engines were built as head bolts dont work loose.

If yours has been ok since then i wouldnt worry, i've only ever seen 2 go so its not gonna be like the K1.8 engine where they are blowing heads every day!!

ok mate thanks for that i needed to know it was ok coz since last time was on the cars been converted to lpg and that makes them run slightly hotter ive been told so wasn't going to get that done till i was happy with it.

Hi there glad to here you fixed your overheating issue.
However i did read that you are going to lpg your engine.

Take some advise from someone who has been there and done that.

DONT DO IT.

You need to spend about 1500 to 2500quid or your just gonna **** the thing up.
1500 and its a bodge with a system that mixes lpg with air via the air in take.( this uses a diaphram to mix lpg with air ).
2500 and they drill the block at each cylinder for a proper job.
however once you have converted the car it will never be the same.
Yes you may save a couple of quid buy, buying gas at 40 p a ltr . I would just flog the v8 and put the money that you are going to spend on gassing it to buying a diesel.( modern diesels can be chipped for a few hundred quid and they will perform nearly as good as a v8 but you will get 30 to the gallon instead of 15.
lpg sounds good but get ready because they never ever ever run 100% right.:(

Got to admit I disagree with your statemement about lpg systems not working correctly, I have one fitted to my 3.5 Classic and thats it no petrol, a properly installed and setup system can work equally as well. The system I have is a simple mixer type which works just like a carb, the more vacuum the more gas gets sucked into the engine, admittidly I have retro fitted a lambda probe into the exhaust manifold and have a closed loop control system keeping everything in check.
The new injection systems are incredibly advanced and can change every aspect of the engine timing and fuelling to maintain optimum performance on petrol and lpg. Think of it like this, if you go to a calor gas supplier that do lpg they usually offer accounts for regular users. So instead of paying 42.9p a litre I pay 38.9 a litre, and with the current price of petrol around the 100p mark thats 2.5 times cheaper. so your 10 - 20 mpg v8 becomes a 25 - 50 mpg v8, now show me a diesel that can do that kind of mpg!! plus I have 4 tanks on my vehicle giving me 224 litres at 15oC or 50 gallons, so worst case I get 500 miles to the tank and best case 1000miles. Nice!

well ive just taken it back ive already had it converted, they have fitted a multi point injection system, it comes with its own set of injectors fitted into manifold, the system has its own ecu and can adjust the fueling to what the lambda sensor reqs it to be, they just plugged it in to check that its still ok and they can adjust it every 500rpm the fueling to 1% differences.

ive heard about the older type systems causing problems but everyone ive spoke to about the new multipoint injection systems say they are just as good fueling system as the standard one fitted to the car, it has as many controls and functions.

time will tell!!

GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR LPG SYSTEM .
I honestly hope it works well and you dont have any issues.( touch wood).
However i still would have gone for a diesel.
The previous chap who also has an lpg range rover would like to see a diesel that can do 50 to the gallon.

Mine does. ( WEll if you consider that i run on pure veg oil at 35 pence per ltr).
I have a 98 dse with a k and n filter and a power flow plug and play chip installed. On a recent trip to AVIEMORE from Sheffield ( 350 miles or so) i returned 41.5 miles to the gallon on my trip computer. Now at 35 pence per ltr i think that is equivalent to about 100 miles per gallon if you buy petrol at 1 pound a ltr.

To put it into perspective on normal driving i get 31.5 to the gallon in and around town.
at 35 pence per ltr for sunflower oil its amazing. admittedly in the winter i thin the oil down with a bit of diesel but not mouch.
So i think that blows the socks of an lpg that possibly does 50 to the gallon.

So does it 50 mpg? you put in your post on the computer that you got 41.5mpg on computer well thats not 50mpg.

The way im looking at it is to fill a 95 ltr petrol tank at 95p a ltr costs £90.25, to fill a 95 ltr gas tank it costs £37 (39p per ltr). so thats 2.44 times cheaper than running it on petrol so when it says average 15.6 mpg on computer it works out more like 38.06mpg compared to if you was running it on petrol (at 95p a ltr) and thats around town with a heavy right foot!!!! If you work it out on a run ive seen 30 mpg on computer on a motorway run so times that by the 2.44 (times cheaper than petrol) makes 73.2mpg compared to running it on petrol.

The main point to not getting a diesel is i dont like them, simple no offence to anyone who like them but i prefer to hear the v8 roar from the engine and the power that the v8 gives out not the rough sound of the diesel this is my feeling on the matter i drove both the diesel and the petrol, so i bought the one that drove the best, with the better power, comfort and luxury.

please dont take offence over any of my opinion at the end of the day you have bought what you wanted as have i, i am very happy with my v8.

no offence taken and good luck with your V8.

Just to clear up the mpg thing though.
I got 41mpg to the gallon on my computer on a trip to scotland.
I buy veg oil at about 35 to 40 p per ltr.
that is 2.5 times cheaper than diesel .
2.5 times 41 =102 mpg.

now that is better than 50mpg :)

Ps i too prefer the noise of a v8 but im tight so i bought i diesel.

ive done head gaskets on a couple of 4.4's and in both cases all the head bolts were loose!!! very strange.

If I got my 03 4.4 Range Rover with 70k on clock to you would you renew head gaskets for me ,if so how many £s. It poped header tank 2 weeks ago so replaced with new one also replaced stat and vicous.
Still seems to run hot to me!

wot a load of bloody tosh mate

Hi cjfj,
Is your RR still running hot ? If so please read my previous posts, it may help, but take note you won't know how hot it is really running until you hook it upto a proper diagnostic machine. Mine was running at 108 degrees then 90 degrees after mod and both showed the same point on the temp guage.

Also how much have you been quoted for head gaskey repairs ?

Thanks..................Adam

Hi Adam car seems ok now, had it on diagnostic running for about 1 hour temp was 106 degrees steady.
haven’t had quote for heads hope it will settle down now.
Interested in your mod though!

Hi Folks,

I too have a P38 (4.6HSE) that seems to be losing all its water.
Happens only on long hi-speed runs when all of a sudden the temp-guage goes all the way over to the stop and the red light comes on. Had my local maintainer pressure-test it and they could not find a leak, but it keeps happening so is very worrying.

When i first got the car five years ago (within 6-weeks of driving off the forecourt) it happened to dump all the water one day and the dealer replaced both head gaskets (at c.67k miles) as a warranty job, it is now at c.98K miles. Should a head gasket really only last that long?

All replies greatly appreciated.

Regards,

Dan.
