Overheated today!

Hi all, my discovery overheated today just as i was coming off the motor way, when i pulled over the coolant tank was empty and there was a lot of steam coming from the engine. I let it cool down and filled the coolant tank with water, but the discovery wouldn't start again. Does anybody have any idea what could be wrong? Is there a cut off switch that prevent restarting the engine for a while after overheating? Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Regards Martin

sounds like your headgasket has failed and is not allowing the compresssion to be built up in the cylinders to enable the fuel mixture to ignite.

Did the engine crank over when you tried to restart it? If it did crank over did it sound normal or more like a high pitched whining? My current thoughts are the same as BMP42's. Head gasket.

Yeah it cranked over and sounded normal, just wouldn't start, didn't wanna burn the starter motor out.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge, i'm an electrical engineer and i'm not too good with mechanics.Does the head have to be skimmed, or only if it's warped? I turned the engine off as soon as the gauge had risen. Only bought it last saturday, absolutely gutted! The advice is much appreciated cheers guys.

I would always, always skim the head after a HGF...may cost a few quid but if you call it wrong its gonna cost a lot more time and money second time around.

you haven't said whether its a 200 or 300, if 300 would say that the "P" gasket is the culprit for your loss of water in the cylinder head which has caused the overheating, have not yet seen a disco head that hasn't required skimming after hg failure

straight forward job to do, just take your time and download the rave manual to guide you. also do a search on "p" gasket renewal on here, Oh and make sure you use an "elring" headgasket not a bloody ****part one

definatly use a elring head gasket, ive changed head gaskets many times using ****part gaskets, and the steel laminate gaskets which all tend to leak oil, all had to be done again within six months

fitted a elring gasket, never had a problem again
