hi all i've got a discoery v8 on gas.this weekend is the first time i've pulled my caravan with it ( 925kgs) and when you go up small hills it over heats on the flat it runs just over half way. take caravan off drive the same road no problem. i'm not using water and no presure in system.

Transmission temperature plays a huge part in the overheating with an auto. While towing with an auto, you create a lot of friction/heat in the gearbox. The transmission pumps the oil out to the oil cooler which in some instances is either part of the radiator or attached to it. This puts extra heating into the radiator and puts strain on the radiator's ability to disipate the heat.

Solution?... make sure your radiator and cooling system is operating at its best, and/or perhaps consider fitting an extra after-market oil cooler. (you might make sure your auto fluid levels are up to scratch too)

Auto gearbox specialist once told me that for every two degrees above 160c that the gearbox gets to, halves the life of your transmission.
Cheerful eh?

good luck, man!

thanks for that the prob with that is it over heats with in 2mins when u hit a small hill. auto fluid changed 3wks ago

I have found the same with my v8 manuel whiles towing the van (1275Kgs). Slight up hill and every thing starts to heat up. I was recomded an engine oil cooler. The cooler is a sandwitch plate that goes between the oil filter and its housing and has a cooler that fits infront of the rad. Not done it yet though so I cant give feed back on it. I have however fitted a 82 Degree thermostat which has cooled things down alot. Normal temperature now steady below halfway line when not towing and just about touching the half way line under normat towing (not up hill)

thanks for that i've put an 82degree thermostat in as well and have noticed it running cooler haven't tryed towing yet keep intouch and let me know how you get on with oil cooler

Sorry. The sandwich plate goes between oil filter and housing not filler??? You get the idea though:rolleyes: I will let you know when Its been done.
