Shop forgot to install it... I quickly noticed it after the whole debacle with my temperature gauge. There is a 5 page thread on that. But now I'm wondering if running around without the main ground strap on the alternator connected is somehow at fault? The alternator is putting out 14.5 volts even after being re-connected. The BeCM was swapped to another. As was the cluster and engine ECU...this was all after the ground strap was re-connected. Even though the alternator output is correct, could it still be faulty?

Alternator could still be faulty even with good output voltage but it's unlikely. The only way to tell is with an oscilloscope to see if the output is showing high levels of ripple.

Didn't know there was a dedicated alternator ground. They are grounded through their casing via the pinched bolt to the engine and back through engine ground. 14.5 should only be seen if your car is a 4.6 V8 with an 150 amp alternator. Otherwise should be 14.2.

Unless it's a replacement/recon. The replacement alternator for the MR2 came with a 14.5 volt set point.:)

Not sure if it is a replacement but it does say Land Rover on it(Bosch unit as well). Yes it is a 4.6. As far as the ground, there is a dedicated post on the top right that goes to a large body ground shared with the negative terminal on the battery. The strap was not connected to the alternator.

Not shown as far as i can see on the wiring diagrams or ground distribution diagrams. What year is it?
