The old TD5 makes one hell of a racket..

I've removed the turbo and blocked both the inlet and return lines to eliminate that, as a cause as the compressor has a fair bit of play in it..

Removed the Aux belt and still makes a racket..

The noise is audible and is comparable to shacking a marble in a large sauce pan,

It'll make the noise running and is particularly prevalent when you shut her off sort of a "clang" noise..

It can be made by just rocking the starter too..

Grr..

Probably needs a liner or two to slip and mask the noise.

I thought that was the whole point of a diesel.. make lots of nasty noises? Are you sure they aren't 'normal'

Sounds very much like your crankshaft pulley is about to come apart and bounce around inside your engine bay....

I'll see if I can find the pic of mine when I removed it.

I think so too.
Mine let go a couple of years ago, and it clatters Luke hell, had a kind of double clonk when the engine stopped.

Bought a new one from Turner's, you may find the bolt is pretty tight.

I undid mine by putting a block of wood on the chassis, resting the breaker bar on it then flicking the engine on and off very quickly...

Some pull the stop solenoid wire to stop it firing up ...

I was a bit nervous of that, I took the radiator out and used my trusty impact gun, put it back the same way with a bit of threadlock.
Replaced the seal at the same time.

I'm well aware what a diesel should sound like, If it sounded like it does now then i wouldn't of gone near it..

It's actually 2 metal parts joined by a lump of rubber inside. Usually the rubber separates causing the weighted part to slip. In my case, (and probably yours if you have a lot of movement) 2 of the joining lugs snapped. You can see it wobble clearly with the engine running

Sounds chuffed.
You can take the serpentine belt off and grab the outside of the pulley then try to turn it backwards and forwards, if its OK it will have virtually zero movement, if it turns or wobbles its duff.
