Goes "OK" yep with a manual i suspect it wouldn't be too bad..

Have a go in a diesel VM classic and you'll be surprised, they pull like a train

Even a Transit engine is better than the M51

It pulls cattle wagons , tree stumps, stuck tractors and everything else I’ve ran into? Low range could be a bit slower for me and I really miss a diff lock
You will see how good they are once you have had them to use for their intended purpose. Cars are better at mpg and road speed/power that’s not why I got a 4x4

I don’t see much complaining, the thing is it’s a forum which usually means “I need help for this or that, oh and this broke”
What you don’t hear is “I have covered 4500km in 5 days, half of which pulling a big trailer with no problem, oh and I popped to the shop and splashed through a few puddles for fun”

That’s the nature of any forum you generally only hear the bad or gripes. I couldn’t be happier with our family of Land Rovers.

And even the gripes are mostly light hearted and I really don’t care about my mpg it’s a V8 what did I expect? I wasn’t disappointed. And certainly don’t think any of ours are useless.

Why do you keep yours?

Yup! Me too. Hauling various plant around and across muddy fields etc I've found it to be as good as my old 2A was, even on road tyres.
Maybe I'm missing something and don't know enough about engines but this M51 seems to be great to me. Don't BMW make the best diesel engines?
The TD5 we had in the Discovery 2 was really good too, (but the rest of it was nowhere near as good as the Range Rover).
And the choice between comfort and luxury over fuel consumption was one that I made when I decided to get it. I use mine everyday, for all sorts, have done for five years and still love it.

Nope ‘95DT, never had TC on my defenders so not missed it. Grrr showed me how to retro fit 2wheel TC, but I don’t really need it and you have to rev it up for it to kick in with the viscous whereas you need it more at low rev application. Diff lock would be awesome atleast on rear for if something won’t budge but I can just leave my tires down to 12psi and they spread wide and grip anything
They put the power down well if your clutch can take it

@plumbfisher - Main difference with the BMW i find is doesn’t leak oil everywhere as standard. My other landys turned to dust before 20also

Yes the “mud ball “ has some better diffs in its future. The RRs are fine with the setup for what we need. Unless I brake a shaft then can’t lock stuff manually to get home

I was initially unconvinced that auto could be any good in mud and ****e. I've been amazed. Plus you've got the option of limiting the gear changes by putting it into low range 1,2 or 3. Traction control (mine's 2001) seems pretty effective. Here we go tempting fate, this'll **** things up, I've been half way up the wheels in ****e and still not been stuck...

If you put in "manual LO" and press the sport mode button it makes the auto behave like a manual and you can lock it in a selected gear, like a manual

Yeah, I miss the diff-lock sometimes too. Not often but occasionally. I keep looking at Ashcrofts and their airlockers but I just cannot justify the expense. I have the winch anyway.

I am looking at the ATBs for the “mud ball” if you have TC they make a good mix, I think. And a bit more flexible/user/cost friendly than a full locker, but everything has its pro & cons. Really depends on how deep you get in the poo I suppose. Our RRs don’t go too deep and never been stuck. But the “mud ball” does and is often called upon to pull the locals out of the mud/snow.

Got a Tirfor in the boot. Mine's the TU16 but the TU32 will pull a tank out.

I’ve seen people have them inside an aftermarket rear bumper but not the boot. Suppose itl work fine with the way hatches open out the way. Get us a pic

Hmmm, Datatek is a fan of LSD but personally I would go for the Airlockers.
