I've been a bit of a cheapskate over the years buying only cheap oil and changing it infrequently. Have I made a big mistake or is there a big difference in all those oilson display in the motor spares shop? And what about the additives. Does STP or the others give their value back in improved engine performance?

Would say so speshially on th v8's.Altho the dezuls can get quite fussy too.How cheap are we talking and how infrequently?

I've got a P38 2.5 DSE and as you may have read on another thread I have a tappet problem. I wonder if oil was my undoing here
When cold the engine sound OK but when it warms up the tappet is really noisy.

mines petrol, but it still gets an oil change every 3000 miles using castrol.
Blimey:scratching_chin:At that rate I'd be changing my oil every six weeks. Not cheap when you have to pay for the oil,filter and labour at £45.00 an hour.

Do it yer self takes less than an hour!!!!!!!!!!And is dead easy(once you got the right spanner size)

What you want them for?Could use axle stands but don really need to.Can you get under the motor on the flat (are you a portly gentleman?) if not you need an oil filter-bout a fiver, a spanner to undo the sump plug-someone on here else will tell you what size, and something to take off the oil filter.I used a screwdriver n a ammer, but a filter wrench will cost about £7ish.Then run the engine for 5 mins to warm the oil, shut down engine.Get an old bucket.Remove sump plug drain all oil.Go make cuppa and drink to make sure it all comes out.Replace sump plug.Remove old filter.This may need a filter wrench but ya binning it any way so i wacked a flat head thro the side and used that to turn it, put new one on, be sure to oil the seal first.Tighten hand tight. Put sump plug in. pu oil in checkin the dipstick.once finished take of rshort jolly, allow to cool.top up if needed.Jobs a goodun-honme in time for tea and medals.

Have always changed the oil & filter every 3000 on all the V8's I have owned over the years as it tends to get a bit black. Always used good multigrade-Valvoline mostly and never Synthetic.
Used to do work at Coopers Filters in Abergavenny years ago where they made oil filters under the brand name Fram and Coopers-guess what??-going along the line were Motapart, Unipart and Land Rover filters to name a few.
