I've just got a new switch that isn't Britpart , its "intermotor" put that in and all's good at moment but I thought was all good with Bripart and that failed so lets give it a few days , new part is real old school , looks like something Robbie Barker would sell you down the corner shop

No, from the lamp to the switch, the switch shorts the negative side of the bulb to chassis when there's no pressure. The other side of the bulb is to ignition. Download the workshop pdfs and have a look at the wiring diagrams, they're pretty clear and the colours can be a help, unless the phantom tinkerer has been there before you...the oil pressure wire should be white/brown and the ignition wire should be white.
Given the symptoms you describe, if the wiring is at fault, it will most likely be the white/brown wire is shorting...or it might be another crap switch. If you disconnect the white/brown wire at the temperature sensor and short it to the block the light should come on. If you insulate the end and rattle it round the light should stay off.
Where did you get your pressure switch and which part number?
If at all unsure, double check oil levels and that the dipstick is right. As others have said fit/borrow a pressure gauge.

Ok, been ona 20mile motorway journey today and all seems well , was thinking of getting a pressure gauge , does this look any good (on a budget?) and can I just splice electrics into existing dial lights to be included in ignition loop ?http://r.ebay.com/SmRTuF

Yeah without the Led bit , I'm not trying to pimp it , I'll get one with a proper big hand and numbers on it , I was just wondering if this was the sort of thing I should be looking for only downside is that it looks as if wires are about 2 inches long !

I have just noticed that when I look at the back of the fuse board there are spare spade connectors , I have attached a wire to one of these connectors and it becomes live on ignition , in assuming that if I earth this at the other end of the gauge then I can use this spare connector rather than having to splice into existing wires , any thoughts on this?

Yep, any feed live with ignition on, through bulb and trough switch to earth

OK just about to install oil pressure gauge , on the back there are 3 connectors , can I put red wire for light on same terminal as ignition terminal and black on same terminal as wire to pressure switch which I understand grounds the whole thing , if it comes to it I suppose I could just leave bulb connection and not have it a lluminated

sender unit doesnt fit , diameter looks correct however thread is different , ill need an adapter I think !

11 days without asking for advice, must be a record for me! Oil pressure gauge all wired up and ready to go , however as mentioned thread on sender unit is 12.5mm and wont fit into existing sender whole , also thread is different , does anyone know the details of the adapter I need? , they are all approx £15 so I dont want to make a mistake.

Just fit a pressure gauge as well as the switch. All you need is a t adapter or something similar to allow the oil pressure sender and switch to both be mounted
Interestigly my britpart one is better than the more expensive one i replaced it with that used to flicker een when i had decent pressure

Just seen you have a gauge. Go on to vehicle wiring products website and look at gauges they have an adapter. Fitted to my 12j just fine.
Also i seal my threads with PTFE with no issue
