Personally I'd make my mate fix it, mind you I would also not let any of my mates near my car they are all useless. Or is it one of those stories like "my mate banged this fat bird and got her pregnant what should he do?", i.e. it was you!!!!

Damned unlucky mate, hope ya find a good replacement motor, and possibly a new friend who knows what a socket wrench is

Thats what I was thinking! We all make mistakes , its called learning the hard way. We dont tend to make the same mistake twice. Old building trade saying " measure twice, cut once !"
