Hi guys

I had a few issues on my TD4 where I was only getting around 14miles mpg, after doing a service oil, air Turbo hoses & pollun filters I am happy to report the MPG's have rocketed up to 28/30mpg.

I did have to clean out the Air intake chamber and also there is an alloy vacuum chamber on the left hand side by the small vacuum hose both where full of old oil. I was really happy with the way the car is running,

however,

I went back to fit the MAF sensor and The oil is back in the turbo pipes

Does anyone know what the oil is and where its from?

cheers

all turbos even when working well pass a small amount of oil into pipes, it should be a very thin film on pipe walls, not huge amounts in pools

Hi what does the maf sensor look like and exactly where is it ?I also have a few running issues at the mo,smoke on starting, the mid range turbo thingy and a clunk that comes from the back. Not related i know and it sounds more as if there is something loose some where by the back seat. ah well:)

I get 40+ mpg from mine, you still have some work to do

I agree. My wife's TD4 consistantly returns 39MPG and that is just commuting & urban motoring with no motorway work at all.

You make no mention of replacing the crankcase filter, if blocked or oil-soaked that will cause oil in the pipes.

hi again

I did buy a crankcase filter, but did not replace it. To be totally honest it looked like too much work, do you really think this may solve the oil issue.

I also have a small leak on my fuel cooler, which I am struggling to buy one, LR dealer want £138 + dreaded and will not be available until September so I was going to buy one 2nd hand until then, but I can't find one anywhere in my area. Does anyone know any Landy Breakers or has a fuel cooler lying round by chance, ha

cheers

Replacing the crankcase filter element is an easy job, one of the most important ones to do and will possibly cure the oil in pipe symptom. All you have to do is remove the top to the airbox and you have full access. Either replace the disposable element or fit the BMW unit.
