Did you remove rbc and look for gases? 99 times out of 100 it will be hg. Other time cracked piston etc, That is more common when driven very hard, or injectors not checked serviced.
Check hg, if no problem, come back, there are a few other lines to pursue, but my best guess would be HG!;)

Fairly easy job. Just take your time, unbolt everything, record where it went, keep pushrods etc. in order. Sometimes I cheat a bit by leaving the manifolds and turbocharger on the head, saves a lot of time. Head is heavy, get someone to help lift. I would use all new bolts, cut heads of a couple of the old ones to use as dowels to guide the head down in position. You may find some of the swirl chambers have fallen out, get new and replace if necessary. Quality gasket, Payen or Elring. Good torque wrench to tighten.

It's a turbo diesel, meaning that it's likely to be something like pistons, head, or something serious like that. The 19j engines were pretty bad. This will most likely have been caused by overheating. What sort of conditions were you driving in?

Absolute nonsense. Have you ever had a 19J, or taken one apart?
He has most likely got a blown head gasket! They are common.
Early engines had issues with cracked pistons, sometimes cracked heads and blocks due to localised heating in engine. Rare to see it now, except in an engine that is poorly maintained, thrashed to buggery, or was extremely worn anyway.

It's coming apart nicely but am having trouble removing the exhaust bits.

Again showing my inexperience.... I'm just about to order a gasket set, now my engine is the old 2.5 turbo original engine in the 1988 defender... This is the 19j?

even the later coated pistons crack, it is usually caused by poor injection or over high combustion temps:)

1988 vehicle is not a defender, it is a Ninety! ;) They have 2.5td engines, numbered 19j. Defenders have 200Tdi and on engines.
As I said before, it is possible to remove the head with the mainifolds on. Undo the exhaust at the clamp where the downpipe meets turbo elbow.And remove rubber intake hose. You will have to remove the wastegate actuator or disconnect its linkage, to get one of the head bolts out.
If you want to remove the manifolds, you will need the right spanner or drive bars to get on the nut in the middle at the bottom. Try forum search on that, see what peeps use.
And make sure the rocker gear doesn't fall apart when you have it off, rocker cover comes in handy to keep it together.

I know! :) But not like the originals did! :D

As I said, unserviced injectors main culprit now. No-one ever seems to check them! :( Hoping he has seen the gas blowing up the pushrod galleries in this case, though.
 
I've had a few oily engines, think the worst had alternator failure but that was on a rallycar & there was a conrod through the alternator (also navigating in a mates mk2 escort 1600 bda when number 4 conrod & bit of crankshaft exited through the sump...with a main bearing! made a little bang o_O )

anyway, being serious, I +1 for HG or piston problems :(

Haha that clarifies it.... Now I search for LandRover 90 gaskets I suddenly have a wealth of options!
