L322 Oh no it's another gearbox on a 4.4 petrol zf gearbox 2003

I did have a code reader that read box codes and cost just over £100 and does SRS and ABS. If you dont have one and go to a garage i could have forked out between £420 and £3000. My local indy wanted £420 for a flush with nothing else.
The solenoid was £75 next day delivery plus the new oil, plus filters and gaskets at market price.
Not everyone is going to get away with as little as that but at least your for warned with info before a garage treats you like a cash cow
Phil is a star with the ZFgearbox and if the box gave up id go to him first although hes over 200 miles away.

I have Storey Wilson's 4Dcan diagnostics software. So should be able to read:

Range Rover : 2006-2012
Range Rover Sport : 2005-2012
Land Rover LR3 : 2005-2009
Land Rover LR4 : 2009-2012

Only ever tried it on a Disco LR3 TD6 so far.
 
Just amazed reading this thread. Bemble is "the man" on these gearboxes. This was looking as if it was going to cost a packet to fix(talking 2-3 p38s(£1000!)) Well done on the fix.
 
I have a Launch X431 crp129. This does all cars and does the srs abs and gearbox and live data
It only cost £130 from eBay and has its home in the boot for those " oh dear what's that light for" moments. It's a pig to set up as you have to download the diagnostics , but when it's done it works fine and for all cars
Last week I picked up a snap on solus pro It was New out the box condition with all the keys for £300
It does a lot more inc the air suspension. I was going to sell it on but I think it will pay for itself over the coming years
I have a couple of BMWs as well so a dedicated reader is no good for me.

Think I have same issue, gearbox fine after a service.... ten minutes down the road it goes into "failsafe" and sticks in fourth. It is obviously happening when the oil gets thinner... either solenoid or washer issue as I have checked all the obvious external causes. Where did you get your solenoid from? New code reader for transmission coming at Christmas! Think it was the Isoft/Icar LR2 reader thingy for £137 that you commented on? Good results from Youtubers, thems of us who don't have £500+ for diagnostics equipment!
 
I think it’s worth bearing in mind that solenoid failures are few and far between with the 5HP24. Your issue is much more likely to be the ‘normal’ B-clutch hub/C-clutch drum axial bearing wear, and subsequent failure of the A-clutch O-ring. How sure are you that your transmission is failing safe to 4th gear and not 5th?

100% failing safe to 4th gear. Shows 4th on semi and revs rise from 5th when failsafe kicks in.
