Oh boy, slack timing chain!

Swapping timing covers on my 3.5...

Wish I hadn't discovered this!

Did I say slack?! Blimey, I'm surprised it runs as well as it does. :lol:

Think I'll be replacing the timing chain and gears. Too tempting to replace the cam&tappets at the same time. But if I go that far I might as well rebuild with new bearings, hone bores, new rings and then go the whole hog...

No! I mustn't!!! The rebuild is for my old engine. This engine must just work until the old one is rebuilt.

Replace the gears and chain then?

Its surprising how forgiving these engines are lol.

I saw the pic and thought... hmm yeah thats a bit slack. Then I saw the Vid...... bloody ell !!

Forgiving but the cam timing must be way out from where it should be... Reckon a 3.5 on carburettors originally produced ~135hp? Whats it putting out now? A few dozen and some noise? :lol:

Locky, I had a similar reaction when I took the timing cover off, looked like it wasn't too bad then I poked it and OH BOY.



How about some part cleaning porn? Perhaps not as clean as it could be if you bead/soda blasted it, but I haven't got that attachment for the compressor. Think I should get one.

Still need to get two broken bolts out, will have a go at that today. Bit of MAPP gas or weld on a nut and undo it maybe... Won't distort the aluminium too much will it?

been thinking of making a chain tensioner....

Bit of high grade nylon like Harley big twins use for a tensioner


Make it part of your britpart engine build just bodge the chain tight again instead of fitting a new one

its not the slackness of chain that matters as long as it doesnt jump ,only the timing

LOL zen! There might be but ... I don't know it just wouldn't feel right putting the timing cover back on and ignoring it.

Chain tensioner... haha surprised thats's not something fitted as standard... part of routine service "Do up the 1/2" bolt on the outside of the timing cover every 10,000 miles".. I can see it now! lol
