Off road campers

Hi,

Just looking for opinions.
What do people think about off-road capers and off-road caravans? Was looking at this website Conqueror Australia
Also does anyone know of anywhere in the UK that does stuff like it?

It was intended for a long term expedition really, rather than having just a roof tent.

i cant tell yer where but ill get some piccies next time im on that lane as someone has built a small caravan out of the arse end of a series 109 looks cool as fook (or it will do when he finally paints it to match his 88" series 3

Wonder if it would be possible just put a 'lift kit' of sorts and maybe some bigger wheels/tyres on a regular caravan? Might be an idea

I've looked at doing that but I wasn't sure if the caravan would hold up to the stress of off-road work.

youd have to remove the chassis and boost the strength of the floor somewhat with a 4"x2" frame to kick off with then brace the fook out of the chassis before fitting a landrover axle or something similar but in theory it could be done

if i can build a lightweight miniature caravan ( 2 man wooden tent that looks loke a proper caravan ) out of a conway trailer tent chassis and tow it on the back of a 1ltr pug 205 from manchester to scarfell in the lakes and back i can shure as **** stinks get your idea to work

Aussies have already done that! You would be amazed where they take them!

As for off road conversions, there are plenty of outfits in the UK that convert and sell expedition vehicles. Most of these either are roof tents or internal rear seat bed based, which can be cramped.

You could find an old dormobile, or convert a f/c - there was a nice one in a mag not so long ago.

If you leave the LR scene, there are many jap 4x4 campers such as toyota lite ace, hi ace etc or for more serious stuff, the landrcruiser comes with a body, nissan patrol do a hi-top internal conversion where everything disappears into the side panels.

Truck demountables are probably the cheapest UK option, that will fit on a pick-up.

Depends what you are looking for really. Self build would give you what you want for less money - expedition vehicles do get their price!

i still like the camping trailers with roof tents on, base it on a sankey and you have a trailer that you could tow across a battlefield!

could always take the wheels of a caravan and bolt it onto a proper flatbed trailer, occasionally see 4wd transits could convert one of them, or just take a tent

evry caravan n camping shop ive been in only do plastic crockery and nowadays they do some verry nice stuff too

They only sell plastic plates in camping shops because they know that yer missus and kids hate camping and will eventually get so fed up with living in a cow field in the p*ssing rain that they will crack you round the head with a dinner plate!

dog bowls....the stainless ones.....they're brilliant, you can cook in them, eat outa them, all yer food dont slide off when you put em down, easy to clean....and I guess you could even feed the dog from them....at a push.
