Obtaining a CB...

one more thing... does anyone actually use CBs any more other than on Pay and Play days? If i have it scanning during my morning commute, am I likely to actually hear anything? (and yes, it's down a busy dual carriageway from a large town into a small city)
 
usually chanel 19 you might find lorry drivers on that..

good choice going for the cb4x4 guys... I've bought one from them recently and Im very happy with it!!

dont forget you have to set your SWR...if your CB transmits to high on power it might blow and this wont be covered under warranty as you didnt set up the SWR properly...

have a look around the CB4x4 website, there's loads of info on how and why you have to set the SWR

how likely is it that i'll find people though? I'm basically trying to work out if this is something I'll only ever use or listen to while on a Pay and Play day or whether it'll be a good substitute for the radio on my journey to work...

I've not a great interest in chatting to random people all day, but if there's a lot of chatter it'll possibly be far more interesting than the radio(!)

Also, 4x4cb already told me about the SWR... everyone says it needs setting though, but then lots of other people don't then know how to "set" it... The meter tells you what it is, but how do you then set it?

to set the swr you adjust the length of the aerial. usually you can just slide the aerial up or down in the fitting. if it's really bad you'll have to trim the aerial Think thunderpole has a section explaining how to do it.

Not as many as there used to be on the old AM systems in the past
have talked to a few truckers.
So not a replacement for radio or CD's
Some one near me has a radio ham system using channel 4 which is fed through his PC / broadband and around the world, so have talked to people on in Cyprus, USA, Australia and Canada. bit of a bonus but not worth buying a CB for
 
OK, so I have borrowed a CB rig that definitely worked in and around the year of 1991.

Is it still potentially useful today or has the CB world moved on to new frequencies or gone digital etc...?

Everything is exactly as it was in 1991 - the aerial is the same length and all of it is in great condition. It has 40 channels a power/volume dial and presumably a squelch dial (makes the static noise go away and come back!).

I have moved the aerial around my house to get the best signal. When listening the meter reads 1.5 power, 5 signal. When transmitting (with the switch on the back set to "LO") the meter shifts up to 3.5 power, 8 signal.

Presumably, "power" is for transmitting and "signal" is for receiving. If so, my signal is 5 and my transmitting power is 3.5.

So... what is my range and if someone transmits with a modern CB within my range, will I have a hope in hell of hearing it? I'm listening on channel 19, of course, and no - there isn't a scan function!

Just were I am going to mount mine, waiting for Jim (very nice man, and very helpful) from 4x4cb to send it to me when the new batch come in, I opted for the Midland Alan 121. Package Deals & Starter Packs - 4x4 Packages - BasicPLUS Offroader : 4x4 - Midland Alan 121 Package Deal

My 300tdi Disco does not have electric sunroofs, but is the perm live still there, if so what colour is it?

After abit of research on RAVE I dont think it is for the sunroof(mine are manual too) I will post a pic tomorrow. Funny thing is when i select reverse the cb goes off !!!! Fook knows why but hey it works

You got a CB, Del? Transmit on channel 19 if so! I doubt i'll hear you, but ya never know!

And no idea about the MPG yet, need to wait until the tank is empty again (by the end of the week). I've done a days' off roading too, which might have hidden the advantage from cleaning the filter!
 
Newbie, wnating CB help... been advised its a good idea especially as the winters getting nearer that they are good for lanes and off road days. iv looked on the net and ebay and found a couple of deals.

but the prices change so much.

can some 1 break it down as to whatas a good or bad 1 and what im looking for.

Just go to cb4x4 website...
its a brilliant website and tells you everything.. go to the starter packages and read what they do... then its up to you to decide what you need.. they even explain it like basic offroader CB, then the one up says basic off roader with more guizmos, and explain what the gizmos are..

just read it, that's what I've done till I decided to buy mine.

works a treat, bought the whole package deal, including the SWR meter, the instructions are good and the materials, connectors, etc are excellent.

Very pleased with it, have a massive range, havent tested on the plains yet, but could hear my mate all the way across Andover ( Hampshire), go on google maps to have an idea of town size.So on open areas should be even better
