I always use 6 sided sockets but sometimes find shallow nuts where the nut head only sticks out 5mm. If you can't get a spanner in them then sockets are the only option but they can round them oft as sockets have a sloped edge at the front. I was thinking of grinding the sloped edge oft so the sockets sit flat faced onto shallow nutss. Can you buy sockets with a flat face already?

Hi,

I had the same Problem when I tried top open the bolt to drain the gearbox. I almost damaged it completely using a 3/8" ratchet/socket. I think your one on the pic is also a 3/8" one right? I then tried to open with a 1/2" ratchet/socket with a Long enough extension. I think the lever of the 1/2" with the Extension was much better to put more pressure on the bolt which finally worked. I needed less force for the ratchet. I tried different socket till I felt I found a proper one. Had a couple to choose from in a diy garage.

I tried using a 1/2 inch set too with a longer bar. It allowed me to have more control and nuts which snap off suddenly were easier to undo, but I still have problems of starting to round them oft.

The Halfords sets are expensive and still have the slopped edge but not as much as mine. May of their sets look like 12 sided sockets which are worser than 6 sided sockets.

No problem. I'm still thinking a second set of britool sockets 10 to 32mm on a rail for about £30 and grind then oft at work, is the way to go. They're 6 sided sockets too.

Been thinking of the same for undoing the IRD drain/level plugs.

Rounded oft my ird filler plug below and had to remove it with a hammer and chisel.

didnt realise it was that tight.. when i changed my ird a couple of months ago mine undid with not much effort and a spanner did mine...

only used a spanner as i had one under the car and didnt want to get out from under it again lol

Hmmm! I don't consider these things?! I just use snap on 6 point sockets, even if someone's chewed them up they still normally get them out;)

I think mine felt tight due to the position under the car. Sort of feels tight until it snaps undone. I use a torque wrench to tighten it to the correct torque and keep a spare nut too. Never undo the ird drain unless you can undo the ird filler first.
