Numberplate position legalities

Right I've searched but cant find bugger all other than it needs to be vertical on the front



So can it be on the side of the bumper as I'm putting in a fairlead roller on the front and it wont look right on the middle, its currently in the windscreen but I'm wanting to move it tomorrow……

As in on the drivers side by the winch ?

I did a bit of research about this before putting my number plate on the inside of windscreen.

From what I can gather the legalities are that the number plates must be visible when viewed from the front and rear of a vehicle from a set distance ( can't remember how far).

So you should be fine.

I've been told windscreen is illegal :confused: ffs stupid laws, dont see why if its visible and near enough vertical

Yer never gonna see it on the bumper from the back :confused::p

Just go for it....Snot like yer gonna get the book thrown at ya if plod thinks tis iffy
 
I went and asked a traffic cop about this a few weeks ago when using a stick on plate on an mr2 body kit and the only place it could go was almost flat in the front valance, the police walked away from the car about 100 yards and said he could read it so anpr and other drivers could so it would be fine . Moral being if it can be read easily then chances are you will be ok.
 
loads of landies round here have their plates on the side of the bumper at an angle and none I know of have been stopped. Just do it.
 
The law is it has to be clearly visible from the front, other than that it's up to you, doesn't matter if it's on an angle as long as its visible. My disco has it on the roof rack, that's legal as its clearly visible. Inside the screen isn't legal as it takes away te reflective properties of the plate.
 
i have a very similar bumper to the op's, i have a show use only plate on the nearside angled area. Never had any problems as yet....

On my old disco i had a stick one one on the bonnet amd previous to that has a small plate in the windscreen- again never had any problems. Use to use a small tinted motorbike plate on the rear and nothing was said!
Must be something to do with landys as you do it on a corsa or saxo and the police are on you like flies on **** lol

Strictly the bonnet ones are illegal due to no reflective backing and they dont follow the strict format (they must conform to BS standards as well as EU regs nowdays), most people would overlook it though on something like an off roader, a boy racer is different as its just another bit on the list. Thing is according to the law things like towing eyes (protruding style ones) and even fairleads can be classed as illegal but again if your not a **** taker then its OK

I was told that on the roof rack was illegal as it was too fer back from the front of the vehicle.

Whoever told you that was wrong, just needs to be clearly visable from the front of the vehicle, no rules on how far back e.t.c. just on the format, lettering, logos and the like
