My son has just bought himself a 1984 90 which he plans to get on the road by summer. We put it through an MOT test to help us decide where to start. It failed, spectacularly, brakes, not good including the handbrake, steering not good, oil leaks, electrics not good/possessed by gremlins. On the + side the windscreen wipers work (sort of) and nothing needs welding
Looking at a steep learning curve

Not needing welding is a result

mechanical and sparks can be sorted easier than rust

From what you said don’t sound that bad. If it’s electrics on a RR then start to sweat... on a 1984 Defender isn’t a lot to go wrong.

Sounds like a fun project - Like Brian said, rust is the enemy, pretty much everything else can be fixed
