heres a question ...chap over the road with bmw 535...just called me to his car and asked me this...he started his car today..meaning to wait 5 mins to let it warm up..he forgot about it after being side tracked and it was 45m later when son came and asked ..whys car running he realized...now he turned it off and ten mins latter gone to drive off and theres a rattle in engine bay..on tick over ..car drives well just this clanking /rattle on tickover
ive said do an oil change as i think hes cooked the oil...is this possible if engines left ticking over for 45 mins

my olds got told to do similar by AA chap after flat battery (???)

they got a load of limp-mode issues after - i reckon an Italian tune up was required.

combustion areas will be cooler when just ticking over, than when on boost, towing up a hill (etc) so, unless something is not pumping, i think burning is less likley

good thought..i asked what oil he used and surprised that in 15 months hes had car its not had oil change...i use fully synthetic..every 6k..so maybe his oil was crap to start with

45 mins of idling will have done no harm to the oil, unless his water pump is no good in which case it would have overheated.

I leave my Passat idling for hours when I'm on the phone ect.

couple of possibles , if auto might have loose swirl flap ( common on some BMW engines )
might be timing chain tensioner not pumped up to correct tension , wait till cooled right down then take out and
get some revs on , or due to idling without correct tension slight chance of some damage done , or hydraul;ic
tappets need to be pumped back up , re oil unlikely any damage to that , and being bmw 535 would have full synth oil specced as normal , although quite a light variety .
