Hi all,

Can anyone give me some advice of where to get my tyres dirty please?

I am going to North Wales shortly near the Barmouth and Snowdownia area.

I really do not want any major axle twisters but I would like to get the tyres dirty and go somewhere off the Tarmac.

I have looked at a few websites such as http://www.bywaymap.com/index.html however I have no way of knowing how hard or soft they may be?

Can anyone suggest any good greenlanes / byways in North Wales which would fulfil the brief of:

Not to hard

Nice View

A bit of dirt and muck poss a few scary puddles!!

Look south of Barmouth on the other side side of the bay. There's a UCR that runs parallel to the A493. Not hard to see on a map :) From the other side of a bay it must have good views.....

As your profile says you're 113 and from Kingston and you can't find the introduce yourself section then I recommend the A5
 
Not many in that area that fulfill the 'not hard' criteria ... certainly, not if you're driving alone/single vehicle and don't know how to find lanes on an OS map and gauge a little of the terrain from the map contours and colours/notations .... Most are wet, some have very deep puddles, mostly rocky, but a few are also, in the forests, treacherously muddy on side slopes and probably need winches to do safely, if at all! ;)

Having said that, I'm sure there are some, I just don't care or remember them!

I'd suggest finding a mate or a club to go laning with first, and do some a little closer to home. Recovery from Wales might be a tad fraught and expensive!

I've been rumbled! I'm not 113! Who would have thunk it!
The reason is id security.
I am however from Kingston on Thames.
Sorry for not making an intro - Richard younger than 113 yrs. Gsoh, etc.
The main reason is I don't have a land rover. Awesome as they are they don't suit my needs now. I do know however land rover owners are the most knowledgeable and friendly bunch on the planet. Hence why I am here.

Thanks for the a5 suggestion.

I hope my post was going to add to a great forum. Wasn't thinking about my introduction.

Promise to do better next time.

What are you planning on getting muddy tyres in?

It's a Nissan Caravan/Homy 4x4 with all terrain tyres.

Now I realise that this is a Land Rover forum, that a Nissan Homy isn't a mountain goat of a vehicle, and it's probably not great off road. I am hoping however it'll handle a few unmade roads etc. That's why I would like to find anywhere which is off the tarmac, but not actually anywhere to be worried about.

It seems as if people actually use their vehicles for what they're made for on this forum. Rather than just a school run machine. I hope me not having a Defender will count me out. I wanted a Defender, but I'm turning the homy into a camper.

I'm hoping this thread may encourage others who want to dip their toe into going off the beaten track,who like me want soft rather than hard core at the mo.

Without anywhere to safely turn around

What will you do if you have a puncture in the middle of nowhere?

And if you got stuck or broke down who are you going to call to come to your rescue bearing in mind you may have to walk a couple of miles to get phone coverage. Ask yourself all these things before you leave the tarmac.
 
Well we met a VW camper van in North Wales on Nant y Moch I think :D

And he was on his own.

To the OP, there are loads of lanes, off tarmac, which I would happily take my Mondeo down. Go the GLASS North Wales Facebook page and I'm sure someone will point you in the direction of some suitable ones.

But don't try The Bastard (its shut at the moment anyway) :D

I think, like Sue suggested, go to the GLASS website.
I do know that the are some nice all season byways around the Cheltenham area of the Cotswolds. If you get in touch with the Gloustershire rep of GLASS, they could probably advise you further, and you would definitely get some nice views.
 
LOL, perhaps I need to clarify my post, before anyone starts laning in a Mondeo :D

Mine spends its life doing stable and farm tracks, its not exactly pristine. Who the hell thought of putting the cardboard spoiler thing under the front end wants shooting :D

Heheh, our Mondeo broke it's front bumper, rear bumper and probably a lot else, going to the horses and back. Less than 100 yards of farm track, they are NOT the best laning vehicle .. :)

I think Sue has got the idea.

Nothing like hard core tracks as pictured. Something off the road where it is a lane, non tarmac etc.

Yes going to the "bastard" would be crazy however as pointed out there could be achievable lanes?

I guess nothing is possible without landrover?
