I was just about to bleed my front brakes... but there is only a bleed nipple on the offside wheel cylinder.... the nearside wheel cylinder has no nipple! ... but there is a small hole where the bleed nipple should go!

Is that normal... and with a missing nipple how come brake fluid isn't pi$$ing out ??

Common for the nipples to get sheared off by numpties over tightening them....
Luckily they have a hole right down the middle, and you can usually get the sheared end out by screwing an EZ-out into it..... you need a new nipple tho'

damn thought i was goona see some flesh on this thread lol :D wont leak as the tip will still be in blocking the hole as it normally would be. Yours got twin cyclinders on the front? mine did just cant quite remember if the bottom ones got a nipple aswell
 
looking at the state of them lumps of alloy if i was doing an mot on it i would fail it, you need to replace the lot. shear them off with a tigh fitting spanner, failing this remove the drum and brake shoes, if its got any, and try to work out where the studs come in to the cylander and drill thru the casing the twist the nut on the back,
 
Wow .... time for some new bits and be thankful you haven't suffered brake failure on the road. I don't think there's any way to "save" those bits, and frankly it would be silly even to try.

Invest in all new wheel cylinders, brake shoes, hoses and brake-pipes. Replace, or strip clean and grease the adjusters. Be safe - have brakes that are reliable.

You know you really want to do this, don't you?

Ha.. it just failed its MOT... apart from binding front nearside brakes.. just the headlight aim and a rubber bush. ;)

Today I went and bought new brake shoes and wheel cylinders. My main problem will probably be removing the old parts. I was also thinking of buying a brake pipe flaring tool and doing that bit myself too... luckily it isn't my main car.

Strangely.. one of my other 'classics' (E30 325i sport beemer) also failed the MOT this week on brakes...:( so I have just replaced the discs, pads and handbrake shoes on that.

If ya can afford one get a sykes-pickavant one that clamps in a vice, i got 1 cost a fortune but well worth it so much easier to use and gives a suprior result to the ones that look like a nut cracker
