nice and warm heater

As winter is upon us I decided my heater needed looking at. The air flow is OK but only blowing lukewarm.
Ripped out the whole heater and pulled the matrix. Matrix was surprisingly clean so decided to re use .
What I did find is that the deflecter flap which diverts airflow either through the matrix or bypasses it wasn't very airtight, so the fan was blowing air around the matrix thus diluting the warm air.
What I did was to fix the flap closed and stuffed the bypass chamber full of loft insulation.
Now all the airflow is being pushed through the matrix and a toasty cab.
Iam getting warm air through within a few minutes and once engine is up to temp iam getting hot air through, hot enough to only need fanon speed one and even switch off.
OK so I know some smart arse is gonna come on and reply that I won't have any cool air in summer through the vents but I never use the fan for blowing cool air through anyway, got windows for ventilation, so I don't really care. Iam just happy to have a heater that actually heats up the cab.

Welcome to my club. The heater will work that we'll that if you stop in traffic you have to turn the fan down as otherwise the engine begins to cool down and the heaters cool!
Yes my thermostat works fine!! It's just the heater takes it all away! I'm going to part cover my radiator when the temperature drops a bit more
 
I've just bought an electric heated seat jobber from aldi for ten quid so no doubt I'll be driving to work with the windows open tomorrow morning cos my heater burns your foot after a while :D
 
At up marmaduke, yea I got one of them there heated seat covers too, hot bum and legs now, roll on winter.
 
Forgetting the glass fibres I wonder if the op has actually found the cure for crap defender heaters?
I might actually have a look at mine, maybe!

I tried that a few years ago, made no difference what so ever. I tried a rad muff which was useless, a piece of linoleum right in front of the rad worked a little better but still useless.
 
Well all I can say is my heater is much much better than it was before. And as for the insulation blowing round the cab? Well it doesn't, because its the other side of the airflow and sealed.
I was expecting a few negative posts and did indeed think twice before posting, but I've found it works so if anyone wants there heater toasty warm give it a go.
Or you can be negative and put on extra clothes lol.
 
That flap should have a seal, they usually fall apart. If you replace the seal its a good idea to use seam sealer when putting the box back together,
 
Well, the best solution I have found to keep warm in the winter is to buy a Mercedes Benz B class. I shall leave the Defender for summer or emergencies in the snow. I have never had a car that warms up so quickly. Start the engine and within 400 meters its blowing out hot air. And that was in -2 C, first thing in the morning. Now why can't Land Rover come up with a similar system.

They have, along with every other car maker that uses webasto or eberspacher fuel burning heaters..

Webby or Eber wont make heat in 400 yards, I would bet theres an electric heater of some description in the heater box set up to assist when needed.
Also he doesnt say whether derv or petrol engine.
