So moving forwards I have done loads of market searching, getting conflicting advice left right and centre. Mate of mine (ex g wagen owner like me) reckons a diesel disco is the way to go, avoid v8 lpg like the plague. Contact at another forum reckons for what I want it needs to be a Rangie but a v8, someone else recommendsing a diesel Range.
To recap - budget 800-3000. Must be auto and min 5 seats. Used to S Class Merc but now have q7 as main car. 4-5k miles/year of commuting to premises (yard) towing trailer when I find one, poss support vehicle to my vans, used at weekends to kids footie matches, possibly 2 x a year 300 mile e/w to visit wrinklies up north if I dont want to bend the q7. Mileage may increase if the cars-pottering increases. Never tried green-laning (yet) thought doesnt really do it for me.
So:-
Disco or Rangie?
Diesel petrol or LPG ?

if you want total comfort but the opportunity to keep your pockets empty get a p38 RR (have a look in the range rover section for common problems)

a disco will give comfort, warmth and usually reasonably easy/cheap fixes.

having had both I would go for the disco (since defenders dont seem to be an option to you)

It's probably sacrilege but I like comfort too much for a defender. Sold an S Class merc to make way ;)
That said I've heeded the warnings and the search for a sub-£2500 Discovery automatic has pushed on.

Well, I have gone and done it.
Picked up a 300tdi auto Disco on the 23rd, but had/still have man-flu since :(
She came to me as a bit of a shed, but a couple of hours with "da man" and she now looks a lot more presentable. Knackered battery, faulty window switch (i think), rotten rear step and a bolloxed side step but has a lovely sweet engine and responsive gearbox. 114k miles and loads of test.
