Just got a 93 discovery 200tdi.
And I know this might be a daft question, but can anybody explain what the small black gear stick is for and what the hell should be happening when it is in the various positions.

Most of the lights on the dash dont seem to work. When I indicate the towing light comes on.
Tried to put it into 4wd and it seemed to work, the light on the dash flickered for a few seconds then went out. Now I dont know if its back in 2wd.

Any help would be good or if you can redirect me to a thread covering this.

Thanks

Del

The small black stick is for the rear tipper, if you have gravel or sand in the back, very useful.

Never use the indicators, this just confuses people behind you...in this case use the little black stick.

Oh, FFS RTFM.

first up hello,

second its full time 4x4, the 'little black gearstick' is the transfer box selector, on it you have HI, LO and DIFF LOCK, Hi is for normal road driving, Lo is for when you need extra grunt (towing really heavy stuff) or have slow manoeuvring to do (normally can be done in Hi)
DIFF LOCK shout ONLY!! be used where traction is low, as this locks the front and rear propshafts together and if you use it when good traction is available you coudl destroy your gearbox!

Thanks Gonzo for an honest reply to an honest question.

I didnt say I didnt know what it was for, I just wanted to know that I wasnt going to destroy my gearbox through inexperience. So I asked the question in the simplest form I thought necessary.

And as most of the replies were slagging me off for being concerned about my discovery and inexperience with a 4x4, then I dont think I will visit this site again.
