Newbie with a key fob question

Ref the 'key or fob' that starts the engine.

The wizzardry is in the key cover. The fob only locks/unlocks the vehicle, it plays no part in the starting. I got a duplicate key cut at the local locksmiths and although it opened the doors and turned the ignition lock, it didn't start the engine (the starter motor didn't even turn). Placed the original key near the ignition lock and hey presto, it started with the new key. The dealer wants 90 quid plus for a spare! The easiest way to have 2 keys is to get 2 duplicates cut from the original and then hide the original in the car near the ignition lock. You can then use either of the new spares to start the motor. Yes, it defeats the object of having an imobiliser but the car tealeaf would have to know that first, wouldn't they?

Any Chance you can tell me what type of keys you had cut, were they chipped? and what was the cost.

I think you've missed my point above. Because of the cost (the dealer wanted £90 each) I just went to my local key cutter and got 2 standard unchipped keys cut - about 3 quid each. The idea is to then keep the chipped 'clever' key tucked away under the dash near the ignition lock. That way the bog standard keys can be used to start the vehicle.
 
Ok, I read your post the other day and got 2 keys cut £5 each, I then attempted to start the car with the cut keys and it would not start, even with the chipped key right next to the ignistion.

Am I missing something or have you disabled the immobiliser?
 
My guy has finally got back to me on the software used to code in the 17TN fobs. He can do it on the bench at his workshop but no software is available to commercially buy and hence T4 will be needed to code it.

maybe gonna call a draw with you g13sjc. A friend of mine came round at the weekend, with her rover 214, 1997. had exactly the same remote fob as my freelander, but, her car wouldn't start unless it was unlocked by the remote fob. Obviously changed the way it works between yours and mine being made.:eek:
