Hi guys,

I'm from Cape Town currently living in Johannesburg, South Africa.

Just bought a beautiful 2003 Defender 110 TD5 CSW. She's not in tip top condition but as far as I've heard, that is rarely the case.

Either way I've always wanted a Defender and I'm completely enamoured with this one despite her issues.

I'm very interested in learning more about repairing and maintaining her as well as the trails and tribulations of other community members.

I'm also very interested in off-roading and camping and adventuring in general and I'd love to meet people with the same interests.

This is my big girl and I'm so looking forward to the highs and lows with her and my family and friends.

And these are some of her problems that I've found so far😂. (I'll probably post each one in its own thread, also if I make any sort of mistake please do correct me, I'm here, partially, to learn)
Vac line(?), in yellow seems vulnerable to being melted by the engine, it's certainly not the standard routing😂

Some number of engine oil leaks,
1 potential source seems to be near to the intake for the turbo, (I have no idea what this circular component is, if anyone knows please let me know)

Second potential source is also near to the turbo. (The bolts that connect the lower line to the intake line (?) seems to have more oil than is leaking from the previous potential source)

There is some oil lower down along that lower line but I've not taken pictures.

The rear diff is leaking oil from the oil screw(?), it also seems like the previous owner or mechanic tried to fix it by sealing it with silicone or something similar.

I think going to try to prop the vac line up so that it does not rest on the engine just until I get more info about that. The rest I don't have the experience to do anything about myself so I'm going to find as much information as I can before doing anything.

Welcome :) again:)

I am not up on the TD5 engine. And always best to ask in the relevant section.
But your yellow hose is a water line (overflow/vent?)
The other bit looks like some form of breather as it comes from the rocker box to the inlet.

But ask in the tech side for better answers.

But it looks nice,
Can I ask what is the bit high up on the back right? Gas bottle, water?

Hope you enjoy it.

Thank you very much, definitely should've started here😂.

That makes sense as it's connected to the radiator. That helps a lot and hopefully means I should be able to reroute it easily. I'll confirm first of course.

Thank you sir I definitely will.

I've been trying to figure that out. The only reference I've found to it so far comes from the owners manual. Essentially the distribution and temperature levers on the interior are connected to the cables that are then connected to that box. Not really sure if it's connected properly. But maybe it's somewhere in here: https://www.lrworkshop.com/diagrams/land-rover-defender-engine/td5
Hope you enjoy it.

Thanks.

Hi & welcome, the round plastic thing with TOP written on it is the engine/crankcase breather & they all do that sir :) (mist a bit of oil that is). Give it a clean & see how long it takes to 'mist' up again or just replace it & see if it stops.

"It's a feature not a bug"😂
Thank you.

No not that.
The bit on the outside pic on the outside of the body on the back upper right.

The bit you talk about is the heater box.

Oh, I see what you mean. It's intended to fit a propane canister for cooking I believe.

She also has a water tank on the opposite side to the fuel tank, which I don't think is standard?
