Newbie looking for first Land Rover

Hello All, I am very much a newbie here.

After running Citroens exclusively for almost the last 40 years, I am now looking for a really good Disco 2 automatic as my current Citroen leaves for the scrapyard tomorrow after 17 years and 400k miles (original everything almost), but as I approach 62 it's time for "a real car"! Something to really enjoy owning, before I get too old.

I really wanted a Defender, but thought it better to familiarise myself with LR on something I can afford!

I've been looking around the forums and buying LR mags for the last few years, but have loads of questions about oil pump bolts, air suspension (although I am totally happy with self levelling), chassis corrosion, automatic gearboxes and probably loads more.... I've read the Discovery 2 buying guide (which probably generated even more questions), but with your help I hope to be a Disco 2 owner soon.
 
Welcome, I’ve just moved on from a D1 to a D2 td5 auto with SLS and ACE. It’s lovely and I’m going to do some preventive maintenance but I do still expect it to bite me in the backside at some point! Really impressive mileage out of the Citroen, must be a shame to see it go! Just don’t expect the Land Rover to be as cheap to run as that was, you do need to keep on top of things in my opinion.
 
Wotcha Pops, I'm just down the A32 and own a Defender. There are a few members hereabouts who have Series and Discos, dunno about freelanders though. They all have their foibles, but whatever you choose you'll love it anyway. You sound better prepared than I was so maybe stop mincing around the edge, dive in! ;)
 
Welcome aboard :) Nice bus a D2 ...

Try and include some proper diagnostics in your purchase budget if you can :)
 
I have had 2 D2 loved both of them, current one is the auto. Chassis corrosion is an issue and now too is body corrosion if models aren’t looked after.


Deffo look at purchasing a Hawkeye or nanocom as well, I would be lost without mine.


If you are going to look at a disco down my way (Bournemouth / Poole / Ringwood area) give me a shout and if I’m free I will come look over it plus can bring my nanocom if needed.

The SLS is nice, auto box is a bit juicy, but nice to drive. Like anything landrover, it just needs a periodic check. Checking fluid levels regularly, having a look underneath regularly etc, but it’s just a life size meccano set really, most things are bolt on
