newbie intro

Hello ALL !!!
My name is Jason and Im from West London and for many years I have dreamt about buying and driving a land rover. For the last few months I have been finding myself looking at pictures and auction sites of Land Rovers and over the past 2 weeks I finally decided to buy one and the search began... I looked at Defenders (my dream car) and Freelander mk1, In the end I went with looking for a Freelander as money if tight. As with buying anything nowadays the Misses has to be informed and to my delight I got the go ahead. I then found and bought a freeland td4 2004 (facelift) 117k miles. The car was very clean when I got it inside and out a few age related marks which is fine for its age, Soon as I got in I started ordering bits and service items for it even a tool kit to carry out the job of servicing it which was a first for myself even my partner chelsea got involed and helped. we are so happy with the Freelander we have decided that instead of are unusual holiday of going to SE asia we will go on a driving trip with the Freelander to France, Lux, Germany and Switzerland andfinally get to do some skiing.

Over the course of looking for the car this site has been so useful and I have finally decided to join you guys.

Welcome...I've never had a Freelander but have heard they're very good. But yes, you will get stick for it!

It is true Freelanders are good.

Hello, After servicing the freelander and getting used to driving it i started to find problems as the days went by starting with a lumpy start when you first got in it each day. Next i could feel a juddering when going along at any set speed like it was choking sightly so of to the local garage (indi land rover) dropped off waited a few hours and got the call from them with bad news..... all 4 fuel injectors need replacing, which i knew is not a cheap job so I asked them to look over the rest of the car before I spent any real money on it they found a few other problems coming to the grand total of £1000 which was a big shock to me at first but any way what can you do sell the car start again and be faced with new problems so i have went ahead with the work thats needed to be done... as they were doing the injectors they checked to glow plugs found out there is no power to them so thats the next thing on the fix list

If it's a company selling it to you like "mad hat cars" then I would consider trying to take it back under any warranty it may have, for them to sort out the repair at their cost.

I have just looked now and seen on his page this "cars are sold on a trade only basis(as is where is) and are not sold with any form of warranty. We are a trade disposal outlet and advertise the vehicle for sale as seen without any form of mechanical check. You should satisfy yourself that the vehicle is roadworthy before driving on the public highway." but he did not inform me about this when buying?

It's a difficult situation. Many will argue from different sides on what the laws/rules are, but he's probably got signs in the office, website and notices on paperwork confirming the same thing: he's selling motors with no warranty and why. It may not have been made clear to you, but I would expect he's covered himself for what he's doing. It would be difficult to say he didn't tell you when the average person would be asking what warranty is available etc when looking to purchase from a garage/dealer. He's not actually doing anything wrong in the sense he's admitted he's flogging motors other garages can't. Not just because they're broken. Age and what make/model it is means some can't shift it. Sadly you won't get a resolution by taking it back. Harsh but it saves wasting yer time. I would be surprised if all the injectors etc have gone at the same time. They may be beyond their best, but a little bit more fault finding (or confirmation it's already been done) would be where I would be going next. May I suggest yer start a new fred in the Freelander section to list yer problems and we will try to help.

What's the mileage? If it's north of 80/90k you'd expect potential problems with the ignition harness irrespective of make. Peripheral engine bits get tired at that mileage and beyond. Hard driving Will bring these out. If you're planning high mileage road trip and to keep it for a good few years I'd spend the money.
