Hi Im new to this 4x4 buisness and just after some general advice, me and my mate are looking at buying a Discovery for about £3000 so Im just wondering what to look for. I know a bit about cars but these are a bit foreign to me.

Also I have aqquired a very old winch, Im told it is off a Series 1 but Im not sure, are these worth anything or should I just bin it.

Cheers Paul

Welcome. There are more knowledgable people than me on here about Disco buying, but generally, check under the rear load space for corrosion, wheel arches and sills/ jacking points.

Make sure engine runs clean when warm, might be a bit smokey when cold if it's a high mileage engine.;)

Sorry for not replying to this but I can only get on the internet at work. We are still on our quest to find a disco but we are struggling, everything we look at is either rotten or has been thrashed to within an inch of its life.

The search continues.

Remember that with £3K you are looking at the lower end of the market and while there are some good vehicles out there you may have to look long & hard before you find one.If that is all you have to spend I wouldn't spend it all on the vehicle as there are going to be expenses & repairs so keep some back for them. Obviously if you can do any repairs yourself you will save lots of money so you should invest in a Haynes manual, idealy you should already have one (and an owners manual) as it will give you guidence when looking at prospective vehicles.

Thanks for all the advice. We have finally found one that I think is going to be a goodun to start with. P reg 300 Tdi with no rot ( that I can see) underneath, Goes into all gears without clunking or grinding and the bodywork is quite straight. All this for £2500. Oh and its done 175000 miles but I dont think diesels are run in until at least 150000. All in all we are quite happy and ready to try some off this off roading stuff.:)
