hi
got my first landy at weekend and enjoyed week of driving to work - today i've been underneath and greased all the propshafts. while i had a rear wheel up on jack i rotated the prop to see why it makes a clunk when i drive off or change gear - unless i'm careful with clutch to be smooth.
the guy i bought it from said they are just like that? i can rotate the prop approx 35-45degrees before the wheels engage - is that normal?
it is the salisbury axle - 1987 station wagon with 200tdi engine conversion. should there be that much rotation before take up in the diff - what is normal and what can/should i do?
Thanks
D

A usual cause of a clunk when you move off or change gear could be the ball joint on the A frame at the rear. I would check that out first before messing about with axles or prop shafts. Normally when a prop shaft is on the blink you get a constant vibration; And those Salisbury rear axles are normally fairly bullet proof; Having said that mine has recently developed a whine which I have to look into.
Welcome to the club.

They can have play in them, 45* sounds like a bit much. Nothing's going to break, but it does indicate wear. A small amount of wear and play on a half shaft can multiply to a lot more play on the propshaft. Do what James said and check for any wear/play on the half shafts and drive members, easy enough to replace them if necessary!

thanks i'll have a look at the a frame but i'm fairly sure the clunk is from the diff/axle. is it just a case of grabbing a frame and pulling about to look for movement - assuming it's fairly robust i don't expect to be able to move it a lot if it's ok...
probably could do with someone who knows these vehicles better than me to sit in it/drive and tell me what's normal and what's not as it's me first one.
i need it on road at mo so can't strip too much but don't want to destroy it either! i knew the salisbury has good reputation for being indestructable but should perhaps get it checked over...
i'm not a mechanic but will happily work on it with manual/guide it's more diagnosing so i don't waste time and money that i dont' have!
thanks for advice!

Just stick it in gear and handbrake on..... then lay under it with a volunteer to rock it(rock not push start and be careful) forward and back...... you will identify where the clunk is coming from if its anything AFRAME related.
