Took my new 77 swb to the local garage to give it a look over pre MOT next month,

front shock absorbers need replacing
nearside rear suspension spring mount excessively corroded
offside rear suspension spring mount excessively corroded
offside front upper axle swivel joint has excessive play
offside read fuel tank insecure - needs new outrigger?

rear cross member is in poor condition

any advise not he above apart from getting the credit card out?
should i get a 1/4 chassis to do the rear cross member & rear suspension mounting in one hit?

any recommendations for good welders in Taunton area?
 
if you have the moolah for a new chassis - and can do the swap yourself - I would get a new galved one from Richards. I can't see the point of messing about with a quarter chassis unless the rest is really solid you never know how bad the inside of an old chassis is.

paying someone else to do a chassis swap would be expensive.
 
Having had a head-on collision in an SIII with a new chassis, I would never want to repeat with a chassis that had 'not yet obvious' corrosion.

If you fit a new galv chassis, you won't get all of your money back when you sell it, but you will be able to sell it for a good price in many years time. The alternative is a life of yet more patches or giving it away.
 
I put a quarter chassis on mine it cost £100 with another £100 on top for someone to weld it all up. All prep work was done by myself. It depends on how much you can do yourself.

I put a half chassis on mine, cost was about £250, done it all myself, then gave the outside a good layer of paint and the inside a good layer of waxoil. If the old one lasted 34 years, this new one with extra protection should last even longer.

How confident are you with your welding? It's a 1 person job if you plan it right.
 
agh think thats a little advanced for me at this stage, did used to play around with a welder of various Minis, need to get some new kit ready for land rover life.
will probably use local garage who was rather exited to work on a old land rover.
he has asked if i could buy the out riggers etc... so any advice on 1/2 chassis or just rear x member only would be great.

is there a diagram anywhere that shows the exact position & Name of each out rigger etc....
 
if a quarter chassis is £100 and a half chassis £250 why is a full one around a grand?

is it some form of mathematical progression

maybe one should buy two halves and weld them together

I thought current thinking went old landy + galvy chassis = £8,000+ :rolleyes:
seems to be the story on ebay anyways :D




and I wish there was still a bare steel option for chassis saved a few bob, and IF well treated from new should outlast the owner!

Yes there is and it will also give you the genuine part numbers for ALL the Landy series 3 components! I refer to the Landrover series 3 parts catalogue June 1988 edition part number RTC 9841 CE. Kind regards. Chris
 
outriggers are listed by there position ie bulkhead left or right , front and rear of fuel tank etc take a look at paddocks website.
 
Hi Murtle, thanks for the offer, i think i am going to get a garage to sort the welding this time around as i am working away lots and would rather get it sorted ready for when i get back, do you have any recommendations near bridgwater Taunton? also on the look out for a good place to get some second hand panels and other bits.
 
For second hand parts, either eBay or if your on Facebook then there is a page called "LANDROVER SALES/WANTS SOUTHWEST" that I've found and sold a few things on.

Though I'd recommend checking the price of new parts from Paddocks online first, as often you can get new for not a lot more.

As for a good garage, I've always used Rapsons in Glastonbury, but only for MOT's and tyres, I do all my own welding / mechanics etc.
