Fired the td5 up today and it sounded like a bag of spanners with moss’s of black smoke then stalled. I had to take the kids to the airport and it died a few times. Goes very lord loses power then stalls, turn it on again and it’s fine for a bit. I checked the water trap. That was clear. Seems to be injectors? Any ideas?

black smoke usually because of fuel air mix so either not enough air getting through or too much diesel getting through. Air is obviously easy to check but fuel/mixture would likely be an ecu signally type thing. (I think!!)

Yep loads of fuel. You could smell the unburnt deisel vapour! Seems ok now just back from a 60 mile trip but had to stop start 10 times in the first 5 miles.

No good this morning. Thick smoke, unburnt fuel smell, clattering engine and dies when revved. After a few restarts it was ok. So when’s to buy bread. Really didn’t want to go when I came out. Took about 15 goes but finally it just stared properly.
I tried the water trap and found the diesel to be really hot. Is there a heater in the pump. Anyway problem persists with the pump relay removed....
It’s like the timing is out. Really lumpy tickover and dies when revved.
Any ideas I don’t head home till Tuesday.

Just paid a visit to the great guys at Landy Point at Angouleme. Replaced the injector harness which seems to have sorted it. We’ll see tomorrow morning when it’s cold. Interestingly it’s cured my radio issue too so it must have been arcing in there!

Still very ill... Fires up on one or two cylinders only and dies when I press the throttle. I thought it was cured last night it was faultless.
Any ideas?
So far I’ve:-
Cleaned red Ecu plug.
Replaced linjector loom.
Run diagnostics (peak charge on all injectors)
Bled water trap.
Changed fuel pump relay
Purged the system.

On the plus side the radio is now working....

I'm getting confused with the symptoms now. Does it simply not start or start well or does it also not run well when it has started, even after a period of running?
Is sounding like fuel pump pressure issue, which may translate into lumpy running when started.
If ok once started then can you try bump starting to rule out starter interference?

I'd be looking at your fuel pump again mate. My injector harness, fuel pump and battery all failed within days of each other it was very confusing

It fires up immediately but rough as old boots. Lots of smoke and un burnt vapour. Stalls if I rev it. I can eventually get it running after numerous attempt. And restarts while driving. Then when it’s at full temperature it seems ok.

Don’t have the tools to tackle an injector....
I’ve just tried to dive it had to restart about 30 times an I crawled up the road in a cloud of smoke. Then out of nowhere it spun the wheels and cleared. Drives fine when it’s hot??? This is baking my noodle.

Have you cleared the peak charge fault code and then re tested. ?
Is that fault still showing on diagnostics

Just a shot in the dark - are there any temperature sensors (fuel, air, anything?) in the engine management system? possibly a duff one making the management system think the engine is hot when it is cold and bu66ering up the air / fuel ratios? would clear once the engine is hot.

I don’t have any diagnostics available today so can’t clear anything.... just been for a perfect 10km drive. Restarted no problem.
Grrrr!

I’d be looking at the connection on the front of the cylinder head where the injector loom connects to main harness, the clips on the plug get snapped off, allowing intermittent signals to ecu, put a tie wrap around it to secure it.
If fault persists check loom for damage.

Connection ok. Leads back to the red plug all checked for continuity and earth leakage. All sound.
I’ve cleaned every connector I can find.
Removed the fuel pump to look for splits & blockages. All good. Loads of flow out of the green pipe.

If loom etc ok, and peak charge fault is no longer relevant it’s sounds like injector seals and washers, you could try a couple of purge cycles then see if it starts better after that, if it does it’s pointing to seals and washers again, but you’ll need a strong battery for it

The pump does seem to run for a long time. Think injector seals could be it. Not a job for the French barn and rustic tools. I’m sure it’ll get us home as long as I can get it warmed up.... thank as always guys. At least I know my loom is ok. My radio now works and I found the worn insulation that kept blowing my indicator fuse so it not been for nothing :)

Injector seals or fuel pump I’d say... but there’s always the crank sensor and the throttle sensor too
