Well after becoming a new member and looking to get a Land rover discovery 300tdi i now have one:)
Its a 1995 model and is totally standard, over all its in pretty good nick just done 100,000 miles as no knocks or anything else untoward.

The only faults i have found with it are as follows, if any one could shed some light on these it would be great.

1. Battery light stays on 24/7. I have done all the normal stuff, checked the battery, alternator and wiring all seems fine, there is no trouble with it starting or loosing charge and has me stumped????

2. The temp gauge does not work, not sure if it the sensor or what, but its not over heating at all????

Any advise would be great cheers

Steve

Perhaps the faults are connected a bad earth somewhere, perhaps the multi plug behind the dash.

You can test the temp guage by earthing the sensor wire on the engine for a second, it will go right up to max.

It is worth putting a meter on the battery and check what its putting out 14.5 volts max it might be a case that its charging but boiling the battery

Do it on idle first, stick all the lights on heaters and screen heater etc, watch the battery voltage drop down then raise the revs and watch that it brings the voltage back up, you need above the 12 volts, probable 13.

Then switch them all off and bring the revs up again it should reach a max of the 14.5, if it keeps creeping up then the regulator in the alternator is fooked.

Cheers for that, i will get the test meter out. So it may be a case of the alternator putting too much charge to the battery?? i will also look at the multi plug to make sure all's good there. Can you just replace the regulator or replace the hole alternator?
I have a Haynes manual and it does show how to strip it????

Try earthing the temp first if it dunt go up then that would lead me to think a fault in the dash circuit, you have a haynes manual so see if it shares an earth.

I have changed the regulator on many occasions in alternators, you need to see if you can get one first and compare it with a recon price.

Well i fixed the temp gauge works spot on now:)
Still not got to the bottom of the battery light stopping on though? There is some oily crud on the back side of the alternator were all the wiring is so i think i will give all that a good clean and see what happens.
