the thing with land rovers defenders is there not the most comfortable vehicles ie not many creature comforts, but they do the job they were desined for and they do it well

I do not mind discomfort/ 14 days without hot water or bed in the mountains with 30 pound backpack on my back/ but can I survive 500 mile trip in Defender????

:D character building-but can the defender survive the trip, how old are you looking at and all motorway

the defender could in good mechanical condition, obviusly you wouldnt take a vehicle you know is in bad mechanical condition on that length trip one in good condition will easily go on and keep going on, but take sensible spares

the younger the land rover, the more reliable. as they get older, they become less reliable.

absolute bollix, my series starts on the button first time every time. my other series drove up to the peaks, pottered around for 2 days and drove back, no issues at all

if you look after them, the land rover will look after you. i dont give a flying **** if it is 5 years or 55 years old, if you look after it and drive it sensibly it will get you where you wanna go.

as for what you are after helena, see if you can find a "rest of world" spec defender. you can pick up a nearly new ROW defender with a factory fitted 300tdi which would save you the hassle

ya f*cking prick, I was explaining fanatics statement, not making a statement of my own. perhaps I should have quoted fanatic instead of helena.

I have modified my post so it should hopefully be crystal clear to everyone.

couldn't agree more about the maintenance issues myself, it all comes down to maintenance. if you service it well and check everything regularly, then it should rarely, if ever let you down.

unforseen circumstances will always occur, but the very best you can hope for is nothing trivial will cause a problem. As a case in point, my wife's zafira, which is regularly serviced by both me and a local garage, and has a good under bonnet and underneath check every few weeks or so recently broke a front spring. No warning, no physical signs, just happened. Nothing I could do to have prevented it, short of changing the springs every so often.

RoW spec, these are vehicles destined for third world countries and as a result have the simpler 300tdi engines fitted. there is very little or no infrastructure for ECU's so TD5 and puma engines would not sell. as a result the 300tdi engines are used for these vehicles and you can pick up nearly new 300tdi land rovers

as i understand it though you would need to do a few mods to make them legal in the EU as they CoC so they are a bit of a headache in that respect. but if the plan is to use it to drive around the world these defenders are ideal, as they are built to be more rugged and less complex than the newer ones.

Nearly new is 17k or more without any modification. It is like my loved Toyota but like he say, Toyota does not have soul like these:

what you have to understand though is that land rover engines, especially the likes of the 300tdi, are very very solid engines. a tdi with 60k miles on the clock is nearly new and low mileage, that is barely a run in for the engine. these engines can and do go past the 300k mile mark!
