Hmm slightly miffed, seems i've bought a £438 pound paper weight.

It won't communicate with the EAS ecu "unable to start communications with the ECU"


footwell connectors spring to mind for some reason?

OBD port is the first thing to look at, there are two dedicated EAS wires. After that, the footwell connectors
 
If the OBD connector ever need replacing on mine, I will fit a "D" connector in the glove box.
I sort of agree given the better quality, but in my case I generally use different diagnostics for engine stuff, simply becasue Nanocom is a bit slow showing dynami sensors such as O2.

In your case very few diag tools work on that engine, so D connector is probably better !!
