Blackburn thank you for you video. Think you have just solved a problem for me. My 2.5TD sounds just like that lots of knocking and heavy breathing like yours.
Much more chance of it being piston problems with a 2.5TD,with no intercooler there is a lot of heat to cope with [look at the size of the rad] and it's hard on them.

It has inter cooler. When I had it running today the rad was getting warm but the inter cooler was stone cold. She starts fine and runs good under light acceleration. Black smoke on over run. Knocks big time when idling. Though exhaust helped it today.

If its a 2.5td how come it has an intercooler?

Modded. It came with it when I got it. It's also in an S2a. S2 non expansion rad and fan intact. Here is my thread
Help!! Oil coming from top of rocker cover!! - Land Rover Zone

OK, hadn't seen that one. Try changing the little washers under the chrome fixings that hold the rocker cover on, the washers are the same as the ones that seal the backleak rail banjos on top of the injectors. It is probable that you have crankcase pressure that is forcing the oil out faster.
I would set the tappets first, and check that the vacuum pump isn't pressurising the engine. If not try removing head and examine gasket and mating faces, and piston crowns.
Im not sure that your running issues are to do with this though, I have seen 19j run pretty well despite having a cracked piston and a blown head gasket.

Btw, have you got any pics of how the intercooler is plumbed?

I was planning some PTFE or thread seal. So will do that first.

Its not the threads that do the sealing, it is pressure on the washers between the base of the chrome nuts and the rocker box cover.

If you do try sealant, be careful none squeezes inside the cover and ends up blocking an oilway.

My old 19j still ran pretty good even with all 4 pistons cracked' two all the way across. Was throwing out whole lot more oil than in your pics Aidso.

That's good to hear. I know it's not the best engine(possibly worst) but they do seem to give you a bit of give when they go.
