is it wired neg earth or pos earth ?
Your glow plugs are wired in whats called a PARALLEL circuit ( all wired in a line).
This means they are wired using the original resistor on the bulkhead
there should be no earth as the glowplugs are self earthing , eg NO END CONNECTION TO THE BLOCK ITS SELF FROM NO 4 PLUG
you can get rid of the resistors too,

have you disconnected it ? what EXACTLY is it connected to the top of the conductors for the glowplugs or the earth of the glow plugs? they should earth them selves
 
it appears like he's connected earth and + charge together, from the bulkhead and over to the engine block. I'm going to work some more in the car tomorrow, got all day so gonna take a notebook and log everything down cause it appears like the guy didn't know what he was doing. Have to check where these wires are coming from inside the car but still don't understand why he connected the all 4 glow plugs to the engine block.

I'll put in an update tomorrow, hopefully some photos as well
 
if the earth and live apear together, check if they go thru a resistor?

post a few pics of yer findings tomorrow, make it a bit clearer what the prob is,

No it's not, it's what's called SERIES because the power passes though each heaterplug in turn. It was how the plugs were wired up when it left the factory. imcluding the last one to earth. There should be a coiled resirter in the bracket on the bilkhead. However tjhere is an aftermarket conversion that uses bifferent plugs wired in parraell, and , I think, does away with the resistor. It is common for owners not to know what the prevois owner has done, and so gwet in a right mess thrying to "put right" their mistakes!

The earth wire goes down to the first glow plug and then they are all four looped together and the last plug is connected to the engine block. Is this really the way they came out of the factory? Do you really have to connect the last one to the engine block?
 
Nice photo, doesn't show the bits we need to see.
Is there a coiled resistor joining the two terminals within the bracket shown?
Are the two wires going to and from each heater plug in contact with each other or either side of a postulation (?) insulator?
 
Just been back to look at your first photos ( a slow task with dial up) and it does look as if you heater plugs are wired up wrongly, but not in the manor you thought. To be sure you need to take a plug out and look at the end of it. Does it have a coil of wire (or traces where it has burnt out)?
 
All the plugs look ok and with the coils undamaged. Haven't tested them yet but they look ok.

I've removed all the plugs and the connections for them (took them in for a bit of a clean up and some anti-seize compound)
