My latest terrible idea

I've camped in a lot of different vehicles during my younger days & think you are going to be a bit short on space in a P38.
Good luck with the heater, ordinary (ie not designed for overnight accommodation) vehicles are notoriously cold/damp overnight.
 
Norseman hi, yeah, oh i forgot to mention I bought a sound deadening and insulation kit for the Blue P38, this thing is going to be toasty! Im going to heavily line the roof and the floor with new insulation.

But no it doesnt stop there, im lining the inside in sheepskin also. I spent 200 on 4 of these rugs, to get started on the roof. I know Ill need more.

I actually made a roof plate, to store electronics and stuff, but, I decided against decapitation in the end

so I've been a few days making the patch for the wheel arch liner. Trying to form this has been interesting. A trial.

I can only finesse 1 side, one side is going to have to be rough, or I'll take off too much material, I have no way of telling its thickness, until it starts burning holes, then I know its too thin

Guys about the exhaust, Ive been absorbing the John McK 47 channel on youtube and also the David McLuckie videos, the most important images for me were these by McLuckie, really handy.

I think my exhaust chimney is direct enough, without too many bends.
The allowed limit for the exhaust is 270 degrees total in the whole length.

It seems to run fine.

There is legislation older than our EU membership between the UK and Ireland so not much will change between the countries.

If you sleep with the tailgate down and your head sticking out with a sort of fabric tent to cover you then it will stop damp building up in the car.
 
@kevstar I am impressed with that heater. Easy to fit?

Yes they are more or less a glug n play, if fitting it in a vehicle id use a fitting like the
one in the link as they dont come with one, also they come with the green see through
fuel pipe which id recommend changing for proper fuel line.

Basically you need two holes one for the inlet & outlet, both are located directly
underneath the unit.

Grrr I'm from way south (Tipperary) so not on that road often. I reckon it would be bad economically for both countries if there were tariffs between us, I buy so much stuff from the UK, its a bigger market with more stuff available. I'm glad that didn't happen.


Back out now to struggle with this metal shield. My whole bloody holiday has been spent on this diesel heater, aaagghhhh!

If I was going to install this heater again, I would get a vent and route the exhaust out the passenger side wing of the 38.

There would still be issues to solve, but routing the exhaust through the wing would simplify it a lot, no fire hazards to deal with on that path.

I know I might be missing something here BUT: if you are doing a lot of camping why not just buy a roof tent?
I used to sleep in my 7series Volvo now and then, when I was younger. If I had been seriously considering getting off the ground when camping, it would've been a roof tent. They're not that expensive, and decent kit negates faffing about with cutting,welding, making holes, etc, etc. It also leaves more room in vehicle for people and kit.
I know some of you like faffing about ;) but I don't get it, just to go camping.

Gold Rover I did call the thread 'my latest terrible idea', so I'm not claiming its logical. Lol.

I did actually live in a Nissan Serena for 6 months, backpacking in NZ. I reckon that and the Range are pretty close, spacewise.

The bird references are a play on Overfinch who did some tasteful ranger rover conversions unlike others hence underpigeon :D
 
I see, I see. Yeah not promoting the look of that L322 copy, just pointing out that the vent could be useful in this circumstance.

Went out and bought flap discs for my grinder, and stone chip to spray the chimney cover. Hoping to wrap up this section of the project tomorrow.
