Doesn't the excess return to the fuel tank. I'm pretty sure that all injection landy's have a pipe going back to the tank.

My tip is to state that your wagon definately does 20 to the gallon and wait for someone to prove you wrong.

A return fuel line is to return overpressure fuel back to the tank from the fuel pressure regulator.

Unfortunately the injector is the last in the line, so if they are firing, that fuels gettin' squirted!

I will try to remember to do a simple continuity test to confirm whether the injectors are linked in banks - and if so, once confirmed, I will have to have a brief 'stand back in disbelief' moment...

Cheers :)

the hotwire injection system was available at the same time as bmw were fitting the motronic system to there cars , pathetic that LR didnt get it until the second batch of p38's years later.

More to the point I was making though they had the chance over the years and years they had it to iron out all the faults like the liners slipping etc and all they did was make them worse!

Haha, this is true. The Rover V8 (or Buick 215, depending on your perspective) started out as a very decent engine, but they have definitely got progressively worse, with the only people ever truely sorting them out being JE Engineering. Shame that Rover / Land Rover never developed another newer V8 engine sooner. In reality, a replacement one was probably due around 1980-85.

Pretty awesome though, my dad has had a few w126 and w116 Merc S-Class V8s, they're rapid, pretty fuel efficient and extremely reliable. One of the w126s had the 5.0 V8, had done nearly 300,000 miles and ran beautifully, didn't use any oil or lose and water at all. Lovely old things.

I am saying I have not seen a landy v8(I have one) that has either done 300k miles or doesnt use any oil or water, certainly not both lol.
Am I missing your point?

Yeah you're missing me point a bit, when I said 'quite the opposite' I meant they are quite the opposite of the Rover V8. :D

I have got a P38 V8 and I love it. And yes, it is an expensive car to run. But that is part of the fun and I am sure, that we all known this BEFORE buying the car. Some take it to the pub, some smoke it. I spend it on the RR. And some do all three....
And had the car now over a year and had NO trouble with it. Nothing major anyway. But one must be aware, that if one purchase an old and complicated car, that will more likely to develop expensive faults.
So enjoy!

Im quite new too, but started pimping already, to the sum of 3grand, new 22" wheels & tyres. Next is exhaust, blacked out windows etc, yippee. Love V8, even got V8 truck. So far so good with mine though, had it 6 weeks, no probs yet, touch wood, lol.

seems you guys like spark plugs and blaming land rover for the poor engines!
but it was je who developed the 3.9 and 4.2 and sold it to land rover!!!
14cux injection system crude but a reliable system motronic what happens looses syncronisation with imobilliser stuck with a non start p38a gues which i would have lol!!!!
if you remove the plugs after just running a few moments yes they are sooty ehich is normal remove them after a run and see what colour they are then worry!

It's more of a light hearted loving jest at the blatent disregard for fuel economy!

However, I agree that I would rather have hotwire reliability than some more complicated system - at the cost of a few spark plugs anyway! :D

I have to say that my plugs were clean (for a landy).

But hotwire reliability- hello stu this is you second visit in 6 months lol

Motronic on the bmw 3 of them and the only problem was a dodgy wire in 9 years.

Dont sound as nice as the v8 though lol-when it works :p

i'd be interested to see what my new plugs are like now that i am using the car more often and for longer periods of time, and also now that the ignition is sorted so it doesnt misfire anymore.

if they are still wet and black then i give up :D

ok then if you want a blatant dissregard for economey from a v8 in a classic here goes went down to fetts leicester to gosport just over 2 hours 155 miles just over a 1/4 of a tank used. return trip less than 2 hours and what was left of the fuel gone light came on in leciester! had a really good race with a few x5 dead loosers 530 d bmw almost beat him and at the end only got 312 miles out of the tank!!!!!!!
