Have you replaced the MAF? A bad MAF signal will make black smoke and more engine noise than normal.
Maf is currently unplugged. Doesn't drive any differently to when it was plugged in. I might give one of the 25 pound ones ago just so I know all is good

If there's no difference between the MAF plugged in and unplugged, then it's dead.
I've had good results so far from a £25 MAF ;)
 
Jeepers - that is some seriously bad diesel knocking going on there. I'd have a google to see what people say about it cause and possible fixes.
It doesnt seem so bad on the video. Should hear it in person! Sounds like something vital wants out.
I've spent many hours on the Google machine but a lot of what sounds similar there's no solution just the post asking for help

Ah, good to know. I thought it was the opposite, if there's a noticeable difference when it's unplugged then it's dead. I shall order a new one today

If the MAF signal is low, then yes, that is true. How no difference means that the MAF sensor is so low on output, that the ECU has likely already substituted a value for it.
The MAF signal is really important to the M47R. Regardless of what other people say.
 
Isn't it true though that if the MAF is unplugged it should not suffer these problems unless there is something else wrong?
It is difficult to diagnose a problem over a forum for sure.
Although after hearing it, I have a suspicion that it's an injector fault. But if the MAF is old, it'll need changing anyway;)

If it turns out to be injector related, I will be on the war path with euro car parts. Although they are still under warranty till November so could play up and get a full set.
 
Right so I've just phoned euro car parts and told them I want a complete new set, was told I'd have to purchase all and they'd send the old ones off for testing then if there's a problem they will refund me for X number of injectors. So no new set of 4. Even if I bought 2 new ones there mighto not be a problem with them and I'm stuck with a 300 pound bill.

That sounds like a bag of spanners (the previous video) -- edit the last two you just posted sound a little bit uneven in places but not too bad ------ the phone AGC also makes the knock louder..
Try unplugging the MAF and see what happens - It sounds a bit too much like a broken clog when revving it static to be the maf, but 0 give it a go.
Have you changed the injector loom ?

My first port of call here would be the injectors / associated wiring.
You have some history there though - the previous owner had - probably -the same issue as you, bought some new injectors, probably after being advised to do by a garage that couldn't actually check them. It sounds like the injectors were not the fault -but, it could be that the ones you have are a sack of sh!t.....
So, the issue seems to have carried over.
After changing the loom (if not already done so) then get a compression and cylinder leak-down test done.

Have you checked for any DTC's on a diag machine ?

That sounds like the injection timing is all over the place, and a good healthy dose of diesel knock as well.

Basically, loom, compression test, cylinder leakdown tests, injector tests (regardless of how new they are!)
I would love to see the injector pulse data on a scope in real time.

it does indeed sound like a bag of spanners, the maf is currently unplugged due to a lack of power, new one has been ordered today so will fit that as soon as it arrives.

there is a good diesel tech fairly local to where i live, after maf is fitted if the problem is still there i may dropped it off to him, either tht or ill buy a diagnostic code reader with live data and see what happens, still might be worth dropping it in for the compression test though as i dont have a tester.

edit: no DTCs last time is was plugged in and no EML light

Definitely consider the overlay loom, @Nodge68 can advise in more detail.

just to throw another angle in to this I've read your thread and if i'm right in thinking it's done over 150000 miles do you know if the bottom pulley has been replaced? I had a very noisy engine last year and it was the bottom pulley the rubber dampening on was failing .... its' behind the os wheel. have a listen.

hi mate, yes its done around 157k, i had a look at the pulley this afternoon after reading other threads on here. theres no obvious signs that the pulley is shagged. doesnt wobble or anything. there is no record of it being changed though.
