My disco camper, and when it got stuck

Hi all,

I thought I'd share a few pics of my disco and it's mods, and also explain how it spent a night alone last night on a green lane.

Mods list is as follows:

Steering guard, Spots on bumper, HD springs, and Gas Dampers, Steel rims, with XZLs on front, and Kingpin muds on back, Safari style snorkel, and sleeping/ storage platform built in.

I've also fitted her with escape gear seat covers (which are actually made for a discovery 3), which aren't a bad fit, and help cover up my stained seats.

The storage platform has a fold up section behind each front seat, which when extended, allows almost bang on 6 foot of room which means that I can fit at a slight angle being 6"1' on a good day.

I also built a little unit around one of the rear windows which works nicely a little shelf for cooking on from inside the vehicle if the weather is bad, and also is good for resting a laptop etc. on if watching movies from the comfort of your sleeping bag.
Underneath it, is more storage space:

The platform has four compartments underneath for storage, and a long thin centre compartment into which a hi-lift fits nicely.

The front compartment has a flip up lid, and I currently use one compartment for a fuel can, water can, shovel and a few bits and bobs, and the other compartment for engine oil, coolant etc. and the discos curtains.

Anyway, last night I took her on a little greenlane outing which is where I took these pictures. Moments later, I decided to get her feet wet in what I thought was about 8 inches of mud, and breaking the golden rule, of getting around and measuring the depth of water, I drove smartly into some huge ruts, and bottomed out the disco, leaving her wheels dangling about 6 inches from the bottom of the ruts. I spent about an hour trying to dig her out, to no avail, and it was getting dark, so phoned somebody to pick me up. I then walked to the road and waited until midnight when they found me. (Lessons learnt: don't go laning alone, and always, always check the ground first before driving it).

This morning I went back up there with my Father in his range rover, and managed to get myself out. I don't have any pics of my disco stuck, as I was too concerned with getting her out at the time, but here are some pics, post recovery:

The lane looked pretty much exactly the same when I drove into it, so please don't think all that mud was from me. No doubt I helped to churn it up a bit, but just for the record, the lane was already a complete mess, foolish as it was of me to drive into it.

It does also beg the question that in a situation where a lane is blocked like that, what is the best course of action to take? Common sense would say go around the mud, as carefully as possible to avoid further damage, but then again, that would mean straying off the right of way, onto private land.

Like you say; thats why we don't go laning on our own and why its best to get out and look when in doubt.

Your correct in that you shouldn't stray from he right of way, i forget off hand but there is a specified width that constitutes the right of way. by going around the problem/obstacle you widen the issue and cause further damage.

Best to turn back if you have to ask the question; "will i make it?"
 
Slightly off topic but I would be wary of using a gas bottle on its side as there is the potential for the liquefied gas to get into the regulator and cause a flame out. Not only will your kettle not boil but if the regulator clears then gas will start to flow again if your cooker doesn't have a flame failure device. I'm aware that forklifts etc have bottles on their side but they use a gas demand valve rather than a regulator arrangement.

Just a quick note to mention that my disco unfortunately blew a head gasket, and due to further damage (scoring on the cylinder etc.) it needs a new engine.

In a rather strange turn of fate, I am now planning to scrap the disco, which is a shame because the chassis is in good nick compared with alot of discovery's (welded once in it's life).

I am going to remove the extras (Snorkel, roof bars, seat covers, steering guard, door ladder, spotlights), and sell them, so if anybody wants them, they will be on ebay later today.

If however, anybody wants to save this disco from it's fate, then get in touch. I would be looking to sell the disco for about 250-300 quid, and it will only be available for a the next day or two before it is scrapped.

Are you buying something else or just quitting with your head in your hands :D
 
And when you have got everything running again, fill the back of it with hardcore and go back with some others with their Landies full of the hardcore, and repair some of the damage that you have helped to cause!

Before you do though, get permission from the land owner ... I have never knwn it to be refused!
