my d1 200tdi project

I have just bought a 1992 k registered disco 1, with the 200tdi.

at the moment she is completely stock, and needs some tlc, - rear end needs repainting, as someone has rattlecanned it instead of getting it resprayed properly.

need a few things on the interior, like the centre console is broken where someone removed it to install a sound system, and the rear window trim is warped where i think a previous owner has installed a sound system, hands free kit aerial etc, and also someones installed rear fold down seats, that def aint factory standard lol, as they are framed style? and sit above the boot trim level so the load cover cant be used.

Exterior wise there is a little rust on the insides of the doors, and inner arches, apart from that everything else is solid, the boot floor has been replaced too.

we bought it for 500, and it had failed its mot days before. it needed new swivel bearings both sides, and the head lamps had corroded and stopped working (wiring burnt out due to the sports blues in there) and the reg plate bulbs had blown.

after replacing the side light bulbs, headlights and reg plate bulbs, we re-painted the head lamps with chrome spray, replaced part of the lights wiring, and re assembled! swivel bearings took a good few hours to replace and then it was back to the MOT station to get the free re-test (so the MOT cost me nothing ;) )

the plans are: get the interior back to stock, new trim panels, and proper rear 7 seats.

possibly install a facelift dash and centre console and door cards. seat covers unless ES leather comes up cheap ;) and give it a good clean.

outside: get the rear re-sprayed blue as the paint job is appalling. new rear bumper as its not in great condition and the boot door catches on it. facelift headlights and grill, snorkel, winch bumper & winch, A bar, light bar on the roof, 2 inch lift, and dislocation kit, - although dont want to comprise too much on road handling. stainless steel back box, new tyres, havent decided on them yet! rock sliders, and quite possible check plating the lower sections of the doors. also need a new spare wheel bracket, as ours is rusted out!

engine wise, not a lot, altho i dont know what can be done with a 200tdi.

we've already had a pain in the backside of a job to bleed the brakes as it seemed the backs were full of air! but its done and they are better now.

we took it off road for the first time yesterday, green laning and across common land on tracks for about 10 miles! (cross country way home ;) ) and it was great, looking to do more 4x4 events, as a few mates have Hiluxs, a kitted up 90, etc.

ill get some pics up the moment i get chance as my mate is using the disco for the moment - im lending it to him to help him out while hes got no work vehicle!

comments welcome :D

Having a few problems now, drivers door lock mechanism is bust, rear door motor is just working (locks only) front passenger window motor is dodgy & struggles on the way up, If you bang the door it goes back up.
Indicator light on the dash works if & when

Just a few bits :)

Got set of doors coming as mine have more holes in then a sieve! new interior, 300tdi front end, possibly 300 loom. 300 door cards with the doors too.

Got my eye on some BFG MTs and have missed out on 2 winch bumpers (one complete with winch too :( ) both didn't sell on EBay! and one bloke agreed to sell me a bumper, I arranged collection to be told he had sold it for double what he wanted

After a trip to Bournemouth in the van yesterday, and giving someone £100 I came back with 4 doors & back door with spare wheel mount, rear seats, fold down seats & all the interior panels, plus a 300tdi rear bumper that's dented but 1000x better then mine.

The new interior is grey cloth & grey panels, compared to the current blue, however I'm still on the hunt for a 200tdi dash & console in grey. My front seats will change to celica recaros I think. So not worried about changing them.

Also fitting my Clifford Concept 300/G4 alarm. As I like remote locking plus I'm not sure the factory one works 100%

Looks like a welder would be an investment!

Mines not a whole lot better I got a 1990 G reg at least you got a LR badge on ya front grille:D

Whats the boot floor like? Front inner wings? these things rust for fun so no surprise you've got that

If you scour the internet theres a fair few places that sell repair panels even on Ebay

good luck wi' the Disco would be interesting to see as you progress

Cheers mate, boot floors been replaced by previous owner :D

Inner wings are ok-ish it's that bit of rust in the pic (under the alpine) that concerns me tho! Lol

Think a welder is on the cards and maybe a new section welded in, it's fine on the outside, so I'm guessing it's from a historic leak

As for the funny seats, they're fold away 'Dickie seats'. Factory installed Land Rover seats that should collapse so they fit under the parcel shelf, there's a sticker on the seat that shows you how.
