to have gotten somebody to do this work for me was a non-starter. It would have cost far more than the car's worth. I was all set to scrap it (I was offered £500 as a breaker) and buy a newer one. Problem is, apart from the pain of allowing her to die, it was suggested here that all Disco 2 chassis were manufactured in 1998, so a 'newer one' might actually be the same. They are basically rotting from the inside out so not that obvious how bad until it shows through.
I have got to finish mine by injecting waxoyl inside the chassis and cleaning painting the outside right up to the front end. Mine is in great shape at the front half. I'm not really sure why the rear half of the chassis should suffer so disproportionately and I wonder if a previous owner had a boat? I suspect immersion in salty water as well as getting caked in mud. I shall have to wash it far more thoroughly and regularly in future.

Problem now is it's 13 years old and will need all the other problems that will occur putting right. Could be a money pit!
 
I forgot to mention, while I was waiting for my MOT appointment date, I stripped out the headliner, took out the sunroofs and sealed them back in place. I also sealed every possible weak spot I could identify; all the screws sandwiching the frames together, the frame to roof external, frame to roof internal, the regulator gear/spacer and bolts, and the roof bars too. Both sunroofs were removed completely and dismantled and cleaned. The glass seals were carefully inspected cleaned, and re-chalked. The drain pipes checked for blockages.

So far it's been dry as a bone; then again so's the weather :cool2:





You can't really see from this but the torx screws that hold the frames together in place are all badly corroded where water has been seeping through them. So is the regulator, it's quite rusted up where the gear sits in the spacer.

 
Another tip for the sunroof cassettes which sometimes gets overlooked.

Where the plastic roller blinds hook into the frame at the rear. Put some silicone around these holes too as if you are parked on a gradient facing uphill.

The water will seep through these holes before reaching the drains.
