Help! I have recently acquired a 1999 Ford F350 Superduty that has been out
mudding. It is filthy. There is mud everywhere in the interior. What can I
do to clean it so it doesn't destroy anything. I have already ripped apart
the doors and cleaned them up, but what about the carpet? Anybody, please
help!

Cleaning up that mess is a real job. Apparently the previous owner
chose to sell the truck rather than clean it. Your best bet is to
remove the seats and carpeting, and clean with a good steam cleaner. By
removing them, you can really do a good job with the steam cleaner, and
you can clean the underpad as well.
Hope you got a good deal on the truck.

Best to remove the carpet and padding as well and either clean
or replace them. May also want to check under the seat for
mud that may mildew later.

Is this just surface mud, or does it look like the truck has
been caught in a flash flood or something?

The carpet is the least of your worries, but like someone else mentioned
a steam cleaner works. Best to be removing it though to get the
underside clean. Mud will go through the carpet and hold water and rot
the floorboards fast.

You also should be pulling your brakes apart for a clean and if
accessible be doing a repack on the wheel bearings. Mud just eats those
up fast and seizes up the brake adjusting parts. Liquid sandpaper that
turns to concrete eh.

The diffs and tranny fluids should be checked carefully for water
contamination as well. If the fluid looks like a flat milkshake, change
it. It doesn't take much to cost you big time.

Same for anything with a grease fitting. Grease it. The amount of
water that will come out of a ball joint or u-joint is amazing after a
mud run or a water crossing.

I own a Jeep CJ7 and used to go out to the local mud pit all the time.
It is tons of fun, but the maintenance time after just got to be too
much.

If I didn't tear everything down after a run, 2 months later I needed
new bearings and brakes.

I now more trail run with water crossings if needed. If I hit mud or
even worse, bog, I tear it down when I get home. Bog is organic mud,
the crap literally burns up inside a bearing taking the bearing with it.

Mud getting in on the bearing seal on engine, transmission etc. will wear a
groove on the shaft, and cause the seal to wear out. Might want to somehow
clean those area as well.
