mud tyres - which is the best

Not at all. I need mud tyres solely for forestry work.

Thanks for all the info. That clears a lot up.

This tyre measurement "31.10.50R15" is new to me. Is this metric or something else?

What's the difference between 8 spokes and modular rims?

Once again, thanks for the info.

yes its metric, try googling tyre size converter and strictly speaking 8 spokes are a style of modular rim........call me crazy but google images can also be kinda useful

I'd don't know the origin of the tyre size maybe it's an older measurement or more American??

31 means the tyre height/diameter in inches
10.50 is the width in inches
R means radial
15 is the rim size in inches

It's more of a pure imperial measurement but doesn't tell you sidewall height specifically. Although you could argue you don't need it if you know the total height and the rim size.

The more common tyre size measurement is actually a mix of metric and imperial, eg 235/85R16

235 is the width in mm
85 is the profile so the height of the sidewall. This means 85% of width in this case
R means radial
16 is the rim size in inches

8 spokes and modular rims are very similar. 8 spokes are what they say, they have 8 spokes. My blue Disco posted earlier in the thread is on 8 spokes.

Modular I guess are names as they are made from more than one bit of metal and assembled. Many have small bolts running around the edge. However there are many which look similar but look a lot like Landy steel rims with holes cut out.

In short it's mosty a style/look thing, no real advantage disadvantage from either.

Nobody will really know which is better, as few people will do back to back tests on such tyres. So mostly it'll come down to preference, which is really people liking what they have and nothing scientific.

I'd check out Fedima tyres too, they do reinforced sidewalls if you want to pay a bit more. Still based on the Simex Extreme Trakker like the others.

Ya do know the OP wot yu quoted posted this in 2008

THE BEST Mud tyre is MAXICRCROSS or Tractor pattern neithe are load legal.

Good all rounder go with insa almost the same tread pattern as simex and far far cheaper. What Ratty has done is a common mod and are ar better than Khumo road slicks.

Fedima 35 inch are actually beating Simex at comps. I never realised they were 35s as theyre actually measure 336.5.

235 85 R16 would fit perrrfect on a 110 no mods steering stops maybe but would be great IMO.

"What's the best?" is an open ended question, hence why there's so much debate here...

I think Harry Hill needs to instigate a fight on this one!!

Anyone tried any Insa Turbo Dakar mud terrain tyres? I'm considering a set of 235/70r16 for my defender as Simmonites do a fairly good deal. I know they're remoulds but for winter off roading (Shooting ground) they look fine.

Any thoughts?

Hi Doug

Yes the old BFG mud terrain copies not a bad tyre for an all rounder sorta 70% offroad 30% road. I know Classic Kev has them and he does a fair few road miles and he likes them and rates them alot.

sorry to drag up an old thread but i dont want to start yet another tyre one,

im after people experiances of the fedima f/power, preferably if someone has had them,

ive been warn off remolds as my local tyre fitter (who also has a defender) tryed some insa's and he said the were far heavyer and used way more fuel and remold are a faulse econemy,

I have Coppers SST, but like all of them when they are full of MUD it makes little differance. I want the, ones they put on dumper trucks.
