MOT coming up here's a off the head list of what my disco 1 200tdi needs

Front offside tyre swap with spare (but no nut key)
Headlight alignment levelled
Offside mirror glass replacement
Rear passenger door lock spring / back door
Looks like the head gasket needs doing by the looks of it
Fuel door latch.

It's my first mot since owning it after reading everyone's story's I'm hoping its not that bad but once they do it if it fails at least ill have a list to work from but trying to minimise the work before hand everything else is tidy. The doors are temperamental but would they fail?

Good luck with your MOT.

I paid my MOT man £25 to give mine a quick mock MOT 3 weeks before it was due, so I could ensure a pass first time. It was well worth it and I did the couple of jobs required:

The rear brake callipers, I also fitted new discs and pads. (1 calliper had a leak)
Anti-roll bar bushes (worn but would have scraped a pass just)
Adjusted the front O/S wheel bearing (was replaced 6 months earlier)

Just had advisories left on a small rust hole in the inner wing that’s not structural and an oil leak. Both of those jobs will be attended to when I have the time.

.

my discs and pads should be fine paid 400 notes a couple of months back so I plan on going to the same garage ( could see if they would do a quick check like you did ) good idea that. Cheers. I would like to learn to do all these in time I'm learning a lot on here.

my disco failed its mot in may on headlight aim, corroded rear body mounts & one of the number plate lamp bulbs blown, the advisories included corroded NSF coil spring & corroded front inner wings. i don't have much spare time & it took me to last week end to reset headlights, rebuild corroded OS rear cross member & body mount brackets, replace both front coil springs(while i was doing that the suspension turrets & shocks were also replaced) both front inner wings & headlight boxes plated & repaired plus plated nsr inner wing which he had missed. My wife took the car back to the same mot tester & this time it failed on a hole in the ns chassis rail next to the front body mount plus some 'other advisories`. My wife asked why this had not been picked up on the first mot & the answer wasthat we are only human. I know the mot is only valid on the day of testing & it just goes to show you might think you have a clean sheet but what might they have missed.

Never worry about springs or exhaust corroded on an advisory. Any car over 3 years old will have surface corrosion there and it will remain an advisory for the next 20 if you are lucky.

I would suggest yu find a new MOT station, coz they are ripping you off. My MOT station will adjust headlights if they find em out of alignment as a freebie service. I find more and more MOT places are failing cars on dubious faults. Ok your did have genuine probs as we'll, but if yu ain't happy - walk. Vote with your feet.

Cheers guys The HOW TO will have to listen to my foul mouth this week hopefully it's just the springs in the door job but the cylinders loose in the back door handle shame there's no one close to learn from

why spend £25 on a waste of time pre mot when u can take it a month in advance and get 2 weeks to do work anyway

You can't have the month to do the work anymore, you can still get 13 months mot by sticking it through early but if it fails your old mot is void!!

Once a car fails then it fails and is no longer MOTED hence why people do a pre mot.

In regards to the doors yes they need to be able to be opened from the inside and out. most tester know the doors are a common fault on a discovery so may just advise. I was told yesterday that you can adjust the handles by undoing the internal cover behind the handle undoing the 2 screws that hold the handle in place then move it forward and re tighten??? I have not tried this so dont know if it works but worth 10 minutes to try.

Head gasket should be ok unless the disco overheats and the tester is unable to do emmissions/smoke test

Engines started to get dirty under head gasket mind

A bit baffled set of yesterday as I joined the junction and built up speed I watched the temp rise to half way with in 1half miles and it stays at half but not sure what's normal?

Also my sidestep snapped of a while ago and i need to get the mounting off i've found this pic which i've marked (RED) as a last resort i can grind these off but i would like to get the whole bracket off ready for the sliders later on (no sharp edges for MOT)

So that leaves the chassis bolt! (GREEN) can i undo from underneath and tighten back up after brackets off as its attached to the chassis ?

Sharp edges have to be in a position that is likely to cause injury to pedestrians! So it has to stick out to get em before it'll fail;) running em over to get em don't count!:D

1st i,ve heard of that n i been in motor trade for over 20 years
my mot guys as never mentioned it as well

if u do a pre mot n he finds summat to fail then ur in same boat driving a car with a known fault surely is just as illegal

think you`ll find its down to the wording , its a pre mot inspection not test.
you`re just ask for an opinion as to wether it will pass test:D
