That little welder will do you fine, Sean's right though, that bottle will last no time, getting larger bottles refilled is cheap, its the bottle rental thats dear. you want CO2 or Agomix, Argomix is CO2 with 8% Argon.
Also those little wire drums dont last long, buy larger ones next time you get wire. most welders will take the next size up,

Keep us informed then.. good luck.

nice to see someone willing to have a go at repairing instead of just scrapping. although all these rusty discos make excellent doners for tired dependers.best of luck mate

0.8 wire will do the job fine I use it most of the time unless doing some heavy stuff , best to practice on some scrap bits first so you get the welder set up just right cos for a start you might tend to blow holes in thin metal and good for a bit of practice too also make sure that all surfaces to be welded are really clean as Mig welders don't like rust or paint etc , as for gas personally I use Argoshield Heavy in large bottles as the small ones last no time .

Right im just waiting for delivery of everything now....

martinl & Sean

You two have confused the F*** out of me lol

from your post a few days ago i've got this

you'll need some 1mm mild steel sheet

OK 1mm is a it heavy, a bit thinner then, 0.5 mm

.5mm MS for patching chassis holes ?

i'll shut up then

Lol

Just to confirm for the sills Especially the rear i'll need 1mm Sheets of mild steel?

Have a look at the job mate and see what you need, if you can get away with strips then go for them, much easier than trying to cut full size sheets, also in terms of protection, the mig tosses out loads of little horrible burny bits so wear something substantial and trust me they go everywhere. Ooh fookin orrible so they are

Right i have every thing now apart from my haynes manual and my mig wlder...

I pick up a full gas bottle (Co2) for £35 tomorow night.

just a question does any one know what thread the Offside Front Track rod end is. is im wanting to order this early so its hear in time. and im not sure if its LH or RH?

Regards

Wappy

i would have thought as long as you order it for the vehicle you have you can't go wrong.
where you looking for it

well im gonna get it from Paddocks but it only has listed RH thread and LH thread. from what ive found searching on the forum there are 2 RH and 1 LH on a Disco and knowing my luck i'll order the wrong one lol

They dont have a list eg RH is for Offsde ect ect they jsut have RH thread?

And im confued lol not hard really lol

if your not sure, take a normal bolt out to the car get underneath and place the bolt next to the one you want. if it's the same thread direction it's RH thread, if the threads meet in the middle its LH.

I've got a little better at welding now had a few hours practice..

i also have put several holes in lots of scrap lol...

but i think i have the settings right ready for the job tomorrow. i'll include some pics as well off how its going.

i have a valve with a 6mm hose attatchment but my mig seams to have a 2 or 3mm hose so im gonna see if i can connect them tomorrow with some fishtank adapters.

Regards

Wappy

p.s. when removing the old sills do i need to lift the body up?? or is it unbolt and drill the welds then drag them out lol

im dreading something gowing wrong tomorrow lol and be left with no car next week.. dosent help the mot is next week too lol

I am told that the 3mm will fit inside the 6mm and can be clamped with a jubilee clip.

First rule of welding is only do one side at a time. You can then use the other side to get reference measurements.

Hi everyone,
Ok my hubby is wedged under our landy trying to get the sills off. Hes been there since 8.30 this morning and so far has the bolts off, cant find the spot welds, got so annoyed and took to her with the angle grinder and is now merrily bashing her with a hammer and chisel. Does anyone have the foggiest clue how to get the blumming sills off ?? Is he missing something ??? Hes now a dab hand at welding and has all the correct stuff but cant get them off

Thanks a bunch for any help
I need to preserve his dignity and get these off !!!
:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::doh::doh::doh::doh:

inner or outer sills - or both?

spot welds - onto floor pan where strengthening brackets mount and to A pillar & B pillar - should be easy to identify.
Lip at bottom of sill is where inner and outer join.
Lip along door edge is where outer joins floor angle.
inner is fitted to floor by an angle. Should be able to see spot weld marks on floor.

Thankyou Mad Hat Man..Hes attempting to do the inner sills.....

Hes on his way back out to try find the spot welds in the floor...

Let you know the progress....:)

How good are the outer sills? you know I would be tempted to change inner and outer, there's no need to worry about painting as they will look OK in black. at the pillars just cut it with the angle grinder. an old saying, "you cant make an omlette without breaking an egg", just chop out the bad and make good afterwards.
