I may work abit of magic on it
Sweet
I may work abit of magic on it
Just wondered if we were going to have a meet if only to decide on the route - I'm sure Mike can get an Easyjet flight for less cost than our fuel!!.
Yep, sounds good to me
Yep good idea. Me and james will bimp into each other 3 times this week
But yeah a planned route would be good
Thanks James. Reason I asked is because my crew from the 4x4 Overland Travel forum will be over in Morocco end of March until May.Meeting in Algeciras on the 29th March, back to the UK for the 19th April.
Trouble is, more often than not the vast majority of us seem to fall into the trap of being 'over prepared' ... or to be more precise, we take far too much gear so are fully laden.
"Go as light as possible" is of course the best policy, only that's easier said than done as more and more gear gets loaded. Think we've all done it, it's difficult.

Not sure I'd be any good at this over-landing lark, I'd want to take enough tools and spares to be able to rebuild it in the middle of the desert

Ha, same. I was just going to take all of the tools I used for my rebuild
I am with you. There are limits to everything, If the Defender can carry it why not take it. On our last trip mine was heavily loaded, mostly with food, beers, wine, water, diesel. If I was any lighter I don't see it would have made any difference. Oh, I had one or two spares like wheel bearings, ball joints and tools. For me part of the fun is all the planning and preparation. The only serious break down we had in the group was the 90 breaking a rear diff and front drive shaft which we didn't have spares for.
Next time round I will be a little wiser and could probably reduce some stuff which I didn't need. This might bring tears to Sarah's eyes, like the shower. Not so many Jerry cans for diesel and water. Less tin foods. I suppose it all depends on how inhabited the route is which you are planning on taking.
sounds like a plan, the thing is I wouldn't know where to stop
I'd want tools for any eventuality, you could probably get away with one of the big hafords sets as they have a fair few sockets and the like in, plus a few other bits and bobs.
But I haven't got one, so what do you take? A set of 1/2" sockets would probably do sockets wise, but I like to have a selection for the job to make life easier.
So it'd be 1/4" 3/8" and 1/2" shallow and deep as a minimum
Plus extensions, ratchets, breaker bars and a 56mm socket.
But, but, but...... am I going to round any bolts off? I'd hope not but you never know so I'll take Irwin bolt removers too.
Oh and do I need me allen keys for all them shiny socket caps I've fitted? meh.. take them anyway
Spanners, 7-32mm, hmm nice and easy then, but do I want ratchet spanners as well? Aye probably.
Then it's hammers (several sizes) chisels, punches (various) pliers, grips, mole grips, stillsons, screwdivers and probably a lot of other stuff.
Oooh another one, impact gun? will it stay charged long enough, be handy if it did.
And spares, Christ I wouldn't even know where to start, or is that stop?
Still I know what I mean just better to have it than not and have to pay more for it over their.
Or are parts reasonable over their.
Maybe I need a 130 when I go
Exactly, on a second trip it's much less the unknown, even if people do tell you the first time you go you're probably still going to over prepare.
Better for you 110 lads mind, be tight in the 90.
I'm just looking at storage now. Think I'm going to have to limit my tools to one tool box, then maybe one storage box full of spare parts.
It is going to be tight in the 90, but should be doable. I'm still trying to work out how I'm going to do the storage setup as I want to do a proper job.

Bear in mind you will be going as a group and everyone will have tools etc.
What one doesn't have the other might. We will do a stocktake before hand nearer the time to see who is taking what. My view is your not going to do a full rebuild in the desert, more of a get you to a garage type of repair. If your vehicle is well maintained and you take it steady you shouldn't expect too much trouble. I think the main areas you should look at is Drive train and cooling system. I see you have fitted a bigger motor in your 90, what have you done about the diffs?
