TBH the ports-bilbao ferry is torture! If I had to do it again, I would drive I think. or drive down, ferry back? after driving around Moroc for a few weeks you may welcome the break of the ferry prior to going back to work.

just my thoughts

"There's so much to cram in onboard the Pride of Bilbao and we're not just talking about all the tempting food in our restaurants. We have live entertainment, two onboard casinos, saunas and a gym. We've also got a Steiners beauty salon if you want to pamper yourself. At the end of an evening enjoy a good night's sleep in your comfortable en suite cabin.
Upon arrival in Spain, you'll have the freedom to drive anywhere on the Continent. Bilbao is an ideal starting point for travelling on to Spain, Southern France and Portugal as it cuts out the long drive through France."

I thought it sounded nice, I like casinos, might even pay for the trip :D

Seriously though, what did you not like about it ?

Nowt wrong with Bilbao ferry...Used it for 2 return journeys the past 2 xmas's. Just take your own drinks up to your room or a travel kettle as the drinks aint cheap, unless you like booze cruising. This year when we returned to Portsmouth the Captain let us stay onboard for an extra night with a free breakfast as the weather conditions were so bad around Portsmouth.

Very true, when i drove back from the french alps vire Italy, Switzerland, Germany, Luxemburg and Belgum, it still worked out cheaper than direct, even with the £25 Swis motorway tax.

The ferry is £568 Return

Bearing in mind that we are already driving 3793 Miles in 23 Days, I thought the idea of getting hammered on the Ferry for a day while not driving would be a good idea :D

Also has anyone worked out fuel consumption for a 200tdi on piste driving ??

fully loaded with dusty air filter allow for 23-24mpg.

with regards to the ferry we just got uber bored. not to mention the force 9-10 which made the journey 36hours.

there is only so much drinking, eating, gambling and shopping you can do! Not for me.

Thanks I guessed at 25, and I have 1.222 transfer box, so may scrape that...

I thought you may have been in a storm :D

Hey Rich, you don't need 4 fuel Jerry cans, there is fuel all over the place. As part of the planning I will mark off filling points and distances, and make sure we know where to fill up.

If you want extra piece of mind, one Jerry can would be more than enough, and you very probably won't use it.

Worst case you run out, and I run out on the way to the nearest petrol station to get you gas, the locals would help us (for a fee) :D

But I expect to have my long range tank installed by then, so very unlikely to run out...

We do need to check when we fill up that the tanks are full though, cause they used to run a scam in Morocco where the pumps would show fuel going in, but there was no fuel going in.

As for water, there are wells all over the place, but I'm not that keen on drinking that stuff, so I will be drinking bottled water. But for washing well water should be fine

Griff/Sirus do all the local stores sell bottled water ?

Ive put all these points on my Morocco map, havent routed between them though as i dont know which roads ur using. preaty good detail on this map though. As for fuel i am taking at least 2 jerry cans incase i bust the 110s more than vunrable fuel tank, though i realise i can syfon yours if i run out. :p I have three jerry cans if u want the third.

Not as vanrable as the P38s tank though, theyve put the spare wheel under the back so the only place for the tank was suspended below the middle of its belly!

For water im gona get some 20 liter containers, there about a tenner each and will fit into standard jerry can holders which i can make from angle iron. I recon three or four of them as there will be three of us.

Have u changed any of the above way points or added more since?

Yes it's quite different, pm me your email addy and I'll send you some stuff. And what about a tank guard ? :p

Bottled water is sold everywhere, its what the locals drink. We carried 2x10L containers and 1x20L container for 2 of use but in reality we only ever had the 2x10L full and then 1.5L bottles stashed everywhere. Its surprisingly not that warm in Morocco either side of summer. I would take 10L/person and then when you buy water stash the bottles in all the places there are gaps. I think we were buying 6-8 bottles at a time so your looking at another 10-12L there. The beauty is, when its not needed, you dont have an empty jerry can taking up loads of space and the locals will take the plastic off you.

I dont know if its just me but hauling 20kg of water in and out of the back everytime you want some water does not make alot of sense. try to get hold of 20x10L containers.

A note on the wells, many on the Michelin map have now been abandoned and unless you have a purifier/filter, i would not risk it. I think we only saw a dozen wells along all the roads and pistes we drove.

BBC News - Portsmouth to lose Pride of Bilbao ferry service

Looks like I'm going the long way round then next Xmas....anyone done the route through france. How much is the motorway tolls. Its been about 15 years since I last did it.

o dear.

I would budget £150-200ea. way Si. Think we spent close to £100ea. way going to the Alps (700mile?) and I think £50-100ish ea. way crossing spain (Bilbao- Algerciras 750mile).
